Lyric of the Day: “Sandblasted and Set Free”

Sandblasted and Set Free by Maxïmo Park

“Sandblasted and set free, a trial run on paper. The earth is solid- you can dig it up, or you can pave it over.”

This would have to be my all-time favourite song by Maxïmo Park. They absolutely hit the nail on the head in every second of Sandblasted and Set Free. The song evokes the feeling of being able to overcome anything; all of the components breeze in and out of one-another to form an impelling song. The bass is played with such a distinct tone of longing for something, as it’s gently played in the evolving verse. The backing vocals add mystery to whether or not someone can get through what they need to. And finally, the paramount chorus kicks in with the supreme lyrics.

After asking many family members, I deciphered the lyrics and what I got out of them was extremely moving. By saying you can “dig it up” means you can dig into the earth; metaphorically meaning “the past”. You would remember what happened to you and not let it go. Or, you can “pave it over” and move on with any obstacles in your life. I think it’s brilliant how the idea of moving on can be said in such an elegant way.

These lyrics written by vocalist Paul Smith were one of my main influences to begin writing. He is able to capture any scenario by stringing creative and beautiful words together, and he always tends to find the perfect combinations. At first, the meaning of the lyrics were something I completely pondered. But once I figured it all out, I was amazed. The first time hearing this song, I was around twelve years old! Thinking back to it all, I’ve been listening to Maxïmo for quite some time now.

If you’d like to enjoy Maxïmo Park as I have throughout all these years, listen to their great new single, Hips and Lips here:
