There’s a certain band A Music Blog, Yea? are completely addicted to… Django Django make us want to have a great time between their fantastic dance beats, enthralling melodies, and wicked lyrics. When Maddie was able to talk to DD’s drummer and producer Dave, we couldn’t wait to learn some new details on this band we adore!
AMBY: The Django Django sound is vast. How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t had the opportunity to hear you?
DD: I’d say it’s ‘music’ that’s all. Because I don’t know how to describe it. If pushed I say ‘ well we love 60s rock n roll and pop and folk.. And we love house music and techno. But we love dub and reggae and dancehall . Be equally we love hip hop and funk… , experimental, calypso, garage, jungle,… You see it soon gets out of hand ! So sticking to ‘music’ is best!
AMBY: Now what was it like starting a band in Edinburgh and what is the music scene like there?
DD: We met there but never started a band there. Edinburgh has too many good pubs. They drag you in and you can’t leave. I had a sampler and a 4 track though. And I spent a whole year learning how to use cubase so I could be a producer so it was time well spent. Music scene there , well the night club ‘pure’ used to run there. Great Techno night. Lots of funk and soul nights and I used to dj for a reggae sound system called ‘big toes hi fi’ I made my own riddims to play out. One of which became the beat for Waveforms.
AMBY: How would you describe your self-titled debut album in three words?
DD: Crispy under crackers.
AMBY: Who do you wish would just go away?
DD: Greedy people who care more about money than lives. Bankers , politicians, war mongers. In general the corrupt soulless assholes that mostly run the show!
AMBY: You have been doing a lot of touring, and you will be doing a North American tour soon. What are some of the craziest things you have seen at your live shows?
DD: To be honest not much. We don’t have a crazy crowd. People wanna have a good time. I’ve seen funny dancing, inappropriate mosh pits and underwear being thrown on stage.
AMBY: I know you’ll be in Toronto soon and that gig will be awesome. What are the last three songs that you have listened to?
DD: Hot Chip- Night and Day, Metronomy- Hypnose, Big Daddy Kane- Smooth Operator.
AMBY: And where did the name Django Django come from?
DD: The western films called django. Before the Tarantino remake!
AMBY: Lastly, tell me something that nobody knows about each band member.
DD: Tommy- he breeds rare stick insects. Jim- he has toes where his fingers should be and vice versa. Vinny- he sleeps in a girls nighty and eats cat food for breakfast. Me- I can’t read or write.
