Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Pigeon Detectives

I Found Out about The Pigeon Detectives a few years ago, and as soon as I heard their fetching and admirable track I’m Not Sorry, I have never stopped listening to them! I’ve always admired how guitar-driven their songs are, so when their guitarist Ryan Wilson took the time to answer a few questions we had for him, I was thrilled. So to get the scoop on what’s going on with the band, check out this interview!

AMBY: So how was your holiday, are you feeling refreshed?

RW: Very refreshed thank you, it’s been a very busy six months for the band we have been recording the new album, touring and making festival appearances around the country.

AMBY: You’re very welcome! How did recording your latest album Up, Guards And At ‘Em!in New York influence your sound?

RW: We’ve been influenced by a lot of New York bands over the years so to be over there and recording an album was an amazing experience. We really got in to NYC life, we were out there for two months. It definitely helped us with our sound, the producer (Justin Gerrish) has worked with a lot of NYC bands which is exactly what we wanted and were going for.

AMBY: What was the best place to eat while there? The food in NY in fantastic!

RW: We had a lot of pizza’s the best being ‘Two Boots’. The food is great in NYC we ate a lot of good stuff.

AMBY: And you’re about to tour again, what’s the craziest thing that has happened while touring?

RW: Yes we’re doing a few small intimate gigs in November in preparation for a big tour next year. There’s been lots of crazy things happen to us, band members have missed flights, got on wrong trains but one of the most crazy things we have done was getting on a tiny plane in Norway and hitting bad turbulence, we all thought we were going to die!

AMBY: Sounds like many intense events! Which musicians would you say influence and inspire you?

RW: I’ve been influenced by several musicians, The Beatles were the first band I listened to and thought ‘I want to play the guitar’.

AMBY: What three songs by Pigeon Detectives have to be on everyone’s play list?

RW: I Found Out, This Is An Emergency and Done in Secret.

AMBY: What’s your proudest achievement to date?

RW: It was to be my Wait For Me platinum disk hanging on my wall, it represents so much hard work and effort.

AMBY: That’s fantastic! Your guitar playing is so energetic, where does that come from?

RW: It’s just the type of band we are, we are a very energetic band, I like playing more upbeat energetic songs, so when we are writing I’ll always try to get my parts like that to suit the song.

AMBY: We were also wondering which guitar would you call your baby and why?

RW: It has to be my 60th anniversary Fender Telecaster, I bought it just before recording Wait For Me, it has featured on all our albums and toured the world with me, I’ll never get rid of that guitar.

AMBY: And lastly, tell me something about each member that nobody knows.

RW: Now that would be telling…. Sorry.

Well, I do believe that ends the interview! Take a listen to their song which Ryan says has to be on your playlist, This Is An Emergency- it’s absolutely stellar. And I have to thank you very much Ryan, for giving me your answers!
