You’ve GOT to Hear This: “Fear Fun”

Fear Fun by Father John Misty

Father John Misty (or Joshua Tillman, drummer for Fleet Foxes) released his eighth studio album, Fear Fun, in May of 2012. I’m Writing a Novel perhaps best captures the weird, folksy vibe of the album, opening with the line, “I ran down the road, pants down to my knees, screaming please come help me, that Canadian shaman gave a little too much to me.”

Equally trippy and catchy opening lines seem to be one of Misty’s lyrical strengths: “Oh pour me another drink and punch me in the face, you can call me Nancy” kicks off the aptly titled, Nancy From Now On. And Misty’s live performances totally suit this strangeness; playing Toronto’s The Opera House in August of this year, he danced it up on stage in an exaggerated, almost theatrical manner, easily snagging the crowd’s attention (aided by his “Legalize LSD” tank top)

But the album also lives up to the second half of its title. Misty’s Nightmares 1 & 2 slows down the pace and offers some haunting “ooh, ooh, oohs” over simple lines about girlfriends mysteriously appearing in the doorway.
So for some tripped-up music fun, live or recorded, you’ve GOT to hear Father John Misty.
