On Thursday the 20th of September, we attended a show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto that far surpassed our expectations. David Byrne and St. Vincent delivered a concert full of musical twists and turns along with beautiful arrangements. As they entered the stage, the twelve piece line up featuring an eight-piece brass section broke out into a refreshing version of their first single Who. David Byrne and Annie Clark took turns trading off on old classics and new favourites.
Ranging from St. Vincent’s lovely Marrow to Talking Heads’ Burning Down the House, the crowd was enthralled with soulful dance beats and melodic arrangements. Their new album Love This Giant is an eclectic combination of funky, percussive, big brass layered with the duo’s tasteful and well-written compositions. Both their voices paired perfectly and when harmonizing, they complimented each other to a tee. After a full set and two encores, we all left the show satisfied and with memories of musical bliss.
