Everything Everything are one of the most innovative, clever and fresh bands of not just a specific genre, but I’d have to say ever. The band creates remarkable music with an entirely unique vibe. They have the ability to showcase little, musical moments of delight as they intertwine acrobatic vocals and elements such as the dynamic yet simple little coughs throughout their track Cough Cough. Between singles Kemosabe and Cough Cough which will be seen on their next album Arc, I’m completely amazed with what this band is doing. To catch up and see what Everything Everything is doing not only musically, we interviewed the band’s vocalist Jon Higgs!
AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential Everything Everything?
JH: Photoshop Handsome, Two for Nero, Don’t Try.
AMBY: Your next album Arc is slated for release in January 2013. How has the bands sound evolved since the last record Man Alive?
JH: We spent a lot longer rewriting the songs to get the absolute best out of them. Man Alive was more a collection of ideas that came straight out, Arc is more refined and more considered. The music and lyrics are easier to approach, and the song-writing is more outward looking.
AMBY: The new single Cough Cough is extremely hook laden. How did the song come about?
JH: I coughed twice at home and then replied ‘yeah’ to somebody. I liked the rhythm that was created and so I sang the intro right there into my phone. I then made a drum track and just started to make stuff up over the top, the parts that survived into the finished song were the bits that stood out.
AMBY: The video has some unique imagery, is the intent to make people think in a subliminal manor about what they are seeing?
JH: Not really, I tried to make the imagery pretty strong and aggressive. The ‘oil’ that we drink and the riot footage should tell the story vividly, though there are some hidden images that work better when they are ‘underground’ and not totally obvious.
AMBY: You have such an acrobatic vocal range and style, who influenced that?
JH: Thom Yorke. I tried to sing like him as a teenager and I couldn’t do it so I did this instead.
AMBY: What is the most memorable moment you have had while touring?
JH: Struggling to make my laptop work onstage in Ibiza.
AMBY: On the topic of touring, what’s your favourite song to play live right now?
JH: Probably The Peaks from Arc, it has a slow build from very delicate to very loud and sounds great in big arenas.
AMBY: How would you define success for yourselves as a band?
JH: I guess being able to make a living from what we do without having to change our music.
AMBY: To quote Cough Cough, “And that eureka moment hits you like a cop car”. What is your eureka moment?
JH: In the song the idea was a person suddenly realising the way the world works and drifting in and out of knowing this.
AMBY: Photoshop Handsome is full of clever and visual lyrics. My favourite line from the song is “My teeth dazzle like an igloo wall”, what is your fave Everything Everything lyric?
JH: That is actually one of my favourite! I also like the line in Two for Nero about the o-zone layer, but it’s a bit rude.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
JH: OK Computer, Nevermind, Siamese Dream.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012 so far?
JH: Probably Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye, it’s undeniably a modern classic.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Everything Everything that nobody knows yet?
JH: Our third album will probably be metal.
Everything Everything plan to release Arc on January, 14th 2013. From what I’ve heard so far, this album is going to be absolutely killer! Listen to single Cough Cough below and keep an eye on the video too, one of the coolest I’ve seen. Lastly, thank you so much Jon, for giving me your answers!
