Gimme Your Answers (Beyond the Stage): An Interview w/ Andy Redfern

AndyEver wonder what happens beyond the stage? Well we do. These roadies, managers, guitar techs, lighting directors, A&R, and even positions you may not have known about make the music you love come alive! We spoke with truck driver Andy Redfern so he can steer us behind the scenes of our favourite bands!

AMBY: How did you first get into your industry?

AR: Met a Fly By Nite driver whilst on another job and he gave me the number and I made the call.

AMBY: Explain to people what you do.

AR: I’m a truck driver working for a company that specialises in the music and conferencing industry. My job is to get the gear to the venue on time and supervise load in/out.

AMBY: Which bands are you currently working with and which have previously worked with?

AR: Currently on European tour with Two Door Cinema Club. Just done a three month with Lady GaGa. Tenacious D. Swedish House Mafia. Rihanna. Il Divo. Ocean Colour Scene. Herbie Hancock. Even the Dali Lama, ha!

AMBY: What is the craziest thing to happen to you while touring?

AR: I don’t really do crazy, I’m 51 so I’m more in need of nourishment these days not punishment. That doesn’t mean to say I haven’t witnessed crazy, but what happens on tour stays on tour ;-)

AMBY: What do you do for fun while on tour?

AR: I love live music so I get a buzz from just being here and watching bands from a very privileged position and meeting some awesome people.

AMBY: What is the best and worst thing about your gig?

AR: The best thing is the music n the people I meet. This tour’s been hoofin quality music quality people keeping it real. The worst thing is I miss the wife and family and my dogs.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

AR: Three albums, mmm. Led Zep- Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon and Nirvana- Unplugged.

AMBY: Where is the best spot to eat on tour?

AR: Tour catering is usually pretty good and it’s free haha!

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about you that nobody knows yet?

AR: I used to be an RE teacher.
