You know a band is great when every tune of theirs is constantly joyous and an absolute treat to your ears. Hey Geronimo are one of these bands. It’s pretty impressive how upbeat, melodic and addictive all of their songs are! We spoke to guitarist Pete Kilroy to see not only what’s new, but also learn about the making of the fabulous Dreamboat Jack video, what’s on their iPods and if there’s an album in the works!
AMBY: For those who haven’t had the pleasure of hearing you, how would you describe Hey Geronimo’s sound in three words?
PK: Fun rock harmonies!
AMBY: How did the band come to form?
PK: Blame Ringo was asked to play a Beatles tribute show last year and half the band couldn’t make it. We still really wanted to do it so we got a few of the blokes from Montpelier and The Boat People (other Brissie bands) and made it work that way. It was such a great night that we formed a new band with the new line up!
AMBY: Who influences Hey Geronimo as musicians and songwriters?
PK: Each writer has their own different influences. I know that Greg is currently swayed by The Vaccines. Ross is always peering back into the 60s and currently I’m listening to a lot of Ben Folds.
AMBY: You have recently released your self titled debut EP, is there an album in the works?
PK: We’re recording tomorrow actually! So yeah, there are a bunch more songs that we’ll have finished hopefully early in the new year.
AMBY: Dreamboat Jack is a wonderful song, what is the story behind it?
PK: Dreamboat Jack is about Jack, the old drummer for Blame Ringo. He had a really weird man-crush on John, the drummer for Montpelier. Always going on about how strong he was… Creepy.
AMBY: The video for the song is fun to watch. Where did the concept behind it come from?
PK: We just had this really small GoPro camera and thought – let’s put this on a remote controlled car! The idea expanded from there…
AMBY: What’s on your iPod at the moment?
PK: Radlands by Mystery Jets has been getting a flogging recently. Also a bit of Billy Joel.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
PK: Grandance by Dappled Cities, Drowning In The Fountain Of Youth by Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males and YesYesYesYesYes by The Boat People. Probably because they showed me that local music can be GOOD!
AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?
PK: Most like to be stuck in an elevator with my girlfriend. She’s a constant laugh. Least like to be trapped in an elevator with Lance Franklin, the full forward for Hawthorne. That guy seems like a real dick.
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
PK: I play football for a local AFL team, the Sherwood Magpies. Touring has made me a bad teammate (taking every second week off) but it’s still a great way to stay fit.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012 so far?
PK: Run With The Wind by Dappled Cities. Absolutely love it.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Hey Geronimo that nobody knows yet?
PK: Andrew learned to play piano by studying in France for two years!
Please take a listen and watch Hey Geronimo‘s video for Dreamboat Jack, it’s pretty brilliant. Before I wrap this up, I just have to say this is a band you’ve got to watch out for in 2013, especially with this new album in the works. I hope big things are coming their way! Lastly, thanks very much Pete, for giving us your answers!
