Some bands shy away from expressing their influences, while others wear them on their musical sleeves. This is the case with This Many Boyfriends. They have the ability of taking pieces of what they love to create pieces of fresh, new music we will love by them. With their “all killer no filler” debut album recently released, we spoke to this charming band to talk about the best songs of 2012, the origin of their name and more!
AMBY: How would you describe your new self titled album in four words?
Ben: All killer no filler
Daniel: THE BEST MUSIC EVA
Laura: It’s really quite good
Richard: Pretty pretty pretty good
AMBY: We were wondering, where did your band name come from?
Laura: Richard sleeps around.
Richard: Ha! It’s from the Beat Happening song The This Many Boyfriends Club. Got rid of the Club bit cos there was another Leeds band around at the time called The Wednesday Club. They are ace, as are Beat Happening!
AMBY: I have been listening to This Many Boyfriends a lot. I hear a whack of influences on it. Care to list a few of your favourites?
Daniel: My favourite influences, or my favourite other journalists have cited as influences? My favourite influence is The Strokes and my favourite influence someone else has thought has had an impact on the album is The Strokes.
Richard: Orange Juice, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Ramones and tons of Motown!
AMBY: What was it like working with Ryan Jarman of the Cribs and how did he get involved producing the new album?
Daniel: It was great, he has that ability to listen to a song, understand the vibe, get the most out of us, and add the final touches to make the song better still.
Richard: He was really engaged and had tons of ideas. Really helped us a lot and really understood what we wanted out of the album. Deciding to pretty much record it live was a masterstroke.
AMBY: What can people expect at your live shows?
Ben: High fives, feedback, running, heckling.
Daniel: Us trying and failing to play our instruments properly.
Laura: Ineptitude and fun.
Richard: FUN FUN FUN. And some songs obviously!
AMBY: Which member would you kick off the tour bus and why?
Laura: Tom if he is hungry or sleepy.
AMBY: The video for (I Should Be A) Communist looks like you had a lot of fun shooting it. How much did the bear actually drink?
Laura: The bear only drinks shandy. He’s a shandypants (southerner)
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
Ben: I can’t whittle it down to three!
Daniel: 5ive – Invincible, Oxide and Neutrino- Execute and My Bloody Valentine- Isn’t Anything
Laura: Nirvana- In Utero, Patti Smith- Horses, Spiritualized- Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Richard: The Smiths- Hatful Of Hollow, The Ramones- The Ramones, Orange Juice- You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
Ben: Other music.
Laura: Painting, although I’ve not done that for anything unrelated to music for a while.
Richard: Watch Breaking Bad, play FIFA, sleep.
AMBY: How would you define success for yourselves as a band?
Ben: Being able to provide my family with groceries, to paraphrase Doctor Dre.
Daniel: Fifa soundtrack….But seriously, what Laura is going to say.
Laura: I feel like we’ve done really well and are more successful than we would have thought possible. But
there’s loads of things we’d still like to do as a band. If we could do this as a job and not all have day jobs as well then I think we’d call that a success.
Richard: Not having another job. I want this to be our career. Not loads of money and success, just enough to do this all day, every day.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
Ben: I don’t really listen to modern music!
Daniel: Mumford and Sons – I Will Wait …..LOL
Laura: Call Me Maybe.
Richard: Any song by Paws. Or Call Me Maybe
AMBY: What is the plan for the near future?
Ben: Get some new songs together that are better than the ones we currently have.
Daniel: Write some songs I think.
Laura: We’ve just toured round England (and one gig in Wales) and that was awesome, so our next plan is to tour outside of the UK.
Richard: World domination.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about This Many Boyfriends that nobody knows yet?
Ben: We pay $1 and each of our songs is listened to and then evaluated by industry professionals before release.
Daniel: Our songs are written and recorded by professionals, we’re another Milli Vanilli.
Laura: We’re all big Dave Matthews Band fans.
Richard: I can’t sing. Oh actually everyone has known that since the album came out. Ooops.
Enjoy the band’s rad track (I Should Be A) Communist below- it’s a great one. And lastly, thanks so much This Many Boyfriends, for giving us your answers!
