I love Twitter for one, main reason: it’s a place to find these hidden, musical, indie gems. And one of these gems I’ve come across are glistening with talent. This gem is a crystal, to be exact! The London four piece called Crystal Seagulls have truly shined in my music library with their melodic and fetching tracks. So to see what the band has been up to lately, AMBY spoke to them about their vibe, songwriting, the man who lives in 18B and more!
AMBY: How would you describe Crystal Seagulls’ sound in three words?
CS: Lustful, addictive, omniscient.
AMBY: The progression in Yours For As Long As You Keep Me is awesome. What’s the story behind the track?
CS: Thanks! John wrote that one, and he hasn’t even told the rest of the band what it’s about, but we’ve all interpreted our own meaning from it I think. Offer him a million pounds and I’m sure he still wouldn’t tell you; offer me a million and I’d happily make something up!
AMBY: What’s the story behind your name?
CS: It came to me as a burning image in the sky after 5 years of trekking bare foot in The Himalayas, when through the misty haze of Everest I caught a glimpse of what I believed to be two glowing Crystalline seagulls…erm, I guess it sounded cool and it’s grown from there!
AMBY: Who inspires you as musicians?
CS: In previous interviews, Elz (lead guitar/vocals) has cited Wham as his major influence! I think I probably can speak for all of the band when I say that it’s anything good, whether it be Rock n Roll music, Hip Hop, Classical, Motown, Blues, or even the seemingly immortal Barry Manilow!
AMBY: I love the vibe you carry with such upbeat rhythms and elaborate vocals. Where’s this energy come from?
CS: When Ben has a bit too much fizzy drink he gets a bit hyper! I suppose that it just comes from the simple fact that we love what we do! Not all the songs are quite so upbeat though…I mean the tempo may be there, but you’ve got to write about the darker stuff too regardless of who it may offend or make feel uncomfortable. When life is good, write about the good stuff, but when it’s going shit, you’d be lying if you were to write how much you love everything…One Direction can’t be that fucking chirpy all the time…I hear the Irish one is into crystal meth at the moment…’Baby you light up…’ something…
AMBY: Who do you wish would just go away?
CS: Fuck me, the list is huge! None of the obvious ones though…erm…how about Nigel Smith who lives at number 18 b who insists on leaving his bins out in the street…NIGEL!!
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
CS: Recently I’ve been doing a bit of rediscovery with stuff I used to listen to, like Otis Redding, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Cure. Newer stuff has been Tame Impala, but I find that you’re always listening to something when you’re out and about with your headphones in. I love seeing people on the bus who are either mellowing out in their seats, or practically bouncing off the walls listening to some heavy metal!
AMBY: What’s next for Crystal Seagulls?
CS: We’ve been together for nearly a year now, and we’ve accomplished a fair amount in terms of getting on iTunes, radio play, playing a festival, writing etc… We’ve been approached by a few management companies and labels, but there’s no rush! We’ve recorded a couple of new songs which we’re in the middle of producing now, so keep your ears out, and there might be a video on the cards as well as some great gigs lined up!
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
CS: Yours For As Long As You Keep Me by Crystal Seagulls…wouldn’t you agree?
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Crystal Seagulls that nobody knows yet?
CS: Wouldn’t you like to know?! A couple of us like to dress up on weekends, and one of us is studying the art of origami upside down… There are many deep and dark secrets within the band! Alright, let’s just say that songs are constantly being written, and some of them aren’t too shabby at all…2013 will reveal all.
Check out Crystal Seagulls’ Facebook and Twitter pages for updates on their great, live gigs and more! Also listen to their “best song of 2012”, their own titled Yours For As Long As You Keep Me! And lastly, thank you very much Crystal Seagulls, for giving me your answers!
