With the excitement of their first single Crystal Maze being released today and many gigs on the horizon, Drift are a band with charisma, talent and groove who can’t be stopped! As for Crystal Maze, the song is upbeat and bright. Your ears will want to focus on that ringing guitar played in the background as falsetto and backing vocals soar over it. The track all comes together perfectly into one mega-chorus which ends the song with a bang. The guitar strumming intensifies and the vocals absolutely kill. Between the little touches in Crystal Maze and the energetic ending, Drift really nailed a great tune. With that, we had to catch up with this dynamic and cheeky band to see what 2013 has in store for them!
AMBY: Introduce Drift to us! Describe each band member with one word.
Jordan: Drift is an ambitious Bristol (UK) based band. We’ve just released our first single and we live for gigs. Jordan- Wacky, James- Lucrative, Jamie- Suave, Miles- Chill.
AMBY: How would you describe Drift’s sound to those unfamiliar with your band?
James: This is usually the first thing people ask us and I still haven’t found a reply that doesn’t make us sound pretentious… Think Foals + Brand New is the best comparison I can think of. At least that’s what we’ve been told.
AMBY: You have some upcoming shows in February, how stoked are you for those?
Jamie: We’re really excited. We played a show just before Christmas at The Louisiana which was big fun and that was with our new songs. We’re massively looking forward to more people hearing the set and playing live is what we love the most, it’s so rewarding. The songs are quite fresh too so hopefully they’ll get even better as we play more.
AMBY: I’ve really taken a liking to your track Crystal Maze, and I heard that you’ll be in the studio this month. What kind of music should we be expecting?
Jordan: Expect a lot of energy, housey-vibes, reverb-drenched guitar lines and catchy vocal hooks. We’re recording two songs this time to be released in the next few months, just to keep the ball rolling and make sure people don’t get bored!
AMBY: Who are some bands you’ve been listening to lately?
James: A lot of Three Trapped Tigers who are supporting Deftones on their UK tour. I’m loving the electronic-mathy type stuff at the moment – Adebisi Shank and Gallops are high on my play count right now too. Oh and the new Bruno Mars album, the production on that is fantastic.
AMBY: What was the first concert you attended and what was that experience like?
James: I went to see Alkaline Trio when I was 14 at the Carling Academy in Birmingham, which sadly no longer exists. I remember my ears ringing for two days straight afterwards. I also remember there being a very hairy person who I somehow ended up behind, resulting in a faceful of hair. This story sounded better in my head.
AMBY: If you could play with any 3 bands, who would they be? Describe your dream gig.
James: Deftones, and So I Watch You From Afar and Sharks.
All three of those bands changed my entire perspective on music and how it’s written, tone, effects.
I think Sharks have probably had the biggest effect on us really. They’re from our hometown and to see guys who walk the same streets as we do get onto a stage in front of hundreds of people, it’s pretty inspiring. I think to support them at a sell out date at Leamington Spa assembly is one something we’d all like to do. Obviously there’s the romantic notion that everyone has of touring arenas, but you know…baby steps.
AMBY: Who do you wish would just go away?
Jamie: Ke$ha. We’ve all had sex with ghosts but you don’t see us going on about it.
AMBY: What’s the best song of 2012?
James: Head in the Ceiling Fan-Title Fight
Jamie: Another Love– Tom Odell
Jordan: Come Up and Get Me– Death Grips
Miles: The soundtrack to Batman– The Dark Knight Rises.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Drift that nobody knows yet?
Jordan: One of us has died before. Legit.
Since today is the day of its release, lend an ear to Drift’s great, new track Crystal Maze below! And lastly, thank you Drift, for giving me your answers!
