Willow Tree by Thomas J Speight is hands down one of the most gorgeous songs I have ever heard. This artist not only expresses his evident talent in this song, for his whole EP Willow Tree is pure brilliance. For me, music that has the ability to give you chills is the best kind. And Thomas’ music is able to do just that. So with our love for his work, Thomas graciously took the time to talk to AMBY about his songs, favourite lyrics and time machines!
AMBY: Hello Thomas, thanks so much for taking the time! What have you been up to lately?
TJS: I’ve just got back off tour…Which was a lot of fun! I went to New York to do some recording and play some shows with Allie Moss. I had a really great time out there
AMBY: Where do you think your love for harmonies comes from? What’s the inspiration behind your sound?
TJS: I think maybe Simon & Garfunkel my mum used to play their ‘best of’ cassette in the car while I was growing up and I just loved their songs but I’m also really influenced by The Beach Boys.
AMBY: Your EP Together or Alone is lovely. What’s your favourite track off it and why?
TJS: I think The River because it’s probably the song that meant the most to me.. I also had a great time recording it with Andy Dunlop and my band mates.
AMBY: You’ve had the opportunity of working with some great acts. What’s one of your favourite recording experiences?
TJS: I think the first time we recorded with Keane & Andy Dunlop from Travis was a great experience because it was the first proper EP I did and I was huge fans of their work. At the time they were both nominated for a BRIT for the best album of the last 30 years..So I felt very privileged to be working with them.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your track Willow Tree? The song is gorgeous!
TJS: Willow Tree is a song about growing old with someone and knowing that this only way you wanted your life to turn out. It’s become our ‘first dance wedding song’ I think it’s on its 14th wedding now..Which is lovely that couples want to have that as their song.
AMBY: What’s a lyric you’ll never get enough of?
TJS: Anything by John Lennon or Elliot Smith but let’s go with John Lennon for this ‘ You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one’
AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?
TJS: I would go back to when they made Sgt Peppers.. It just would of been so cool to of been there!
AMBY: What’s your proudest achievement to date?
TJS: I think getting praise from my peers like Sir Paul McCartney, Ryan Adams etc is really nice which means I’m hopefully doing something right.
AMBY: What’s the best song of 2012?
TJS: Just listen to the new The Tallest Man on Earth record… Every song is a winner! It’s my favourite album of 2012 too.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Thomas J Speight that nobody knows yet?
TJS: I’m actually Right handed even though I play Left handed guitar… I think my wires were a bit mixed up while I was a kid.
Listen to Willow Tree below and be sure to lend an ear to Thomas’ favourite track off Together or Alone, called The River. Lastly, thank you very much Thomas, for giving me your answers!
