SOS‘ debut EP A Challenge to the Dark is a spectacular showing of songs. From the contagious vocals in the opening track Today’s the Day to the EP’s full-bodied closer Hometown, this Glasgow band are creating an advanced and unique sound. Lead singer Jonny Skinner took the time to talk to us about what the band’s been up to and what’s next. So you better watch out because SOS are coming, and man is their music killing it.
AMBY: Hello SOS! How are you doing? What’s the band been up to lately?
SOS: Alright we’re good, we’ve just been celebrating Xmas & New Year, looking forward to 2013 making music.
AMBY: Your EP A Challenge to the Dark is out now on iTunes! Is there an album in the works?
SOS: The songs are there for the album, hopefully we’ll get in & record it this year.
AMBY: Hometown off the EP is a really neat song. What’s the story behind it?
SOS: Cheers… Hometown’s about walking through the place you come from & seeing how much it’s changed & remembering how much it means to you.
AMBY: How would you describe your music to those unfamiliar with you?
SOS: It’s a big angry wall of sound.
AMBY: I have to tell you that your EP artwork is pretty wicked and trippy. What inspired the look for that?
SOS: It was a picture our manager Cass took of me when we were filming the video for A Challenge to the Dark, it just seemed to fit in with everything, so we used it.
AMBY: What can people expect at your live shows?
SOS: Feedback, excitement, a good old sing song.
AMBY: What album are you most embarrassed to own?
SOS: Dunno if I’m embarrassed by any of them, they all mean something. Maybe 1 of my Sister’s Spice Girl albums might have sneaked its way into my collection….So probably 1 of those….Saying that 2 Become 1 was a classic.
AMBY: Which trend in music do you find the most annoying?
SOS: 90% of music these days is shit & it has been for a while. It all sounds the same from the X factor to Rock’ n ‘Roll ,same phony cunts singing about shit that means nothing to anyone. Maybe it’s down to record companies not giving people the chance cause of money, cause good song writers don’t stop being born. Who knows what’s up but something’s got to give cause its depressing.
AMBY: What’s the best song of 2012?
SOS: Probs Jake Bugg Lighting Bolt.
AMBY: What are you looking forward to most in the New Year?
SOS: Getting in & recording some songs that mean something.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about SOS that nobody knows yet?
SOS: Our keyboard player, Stu, has the bushiest eyebrows since Noel Gallagher and our drummer, Cobo, is neighbours with Susan Boyle…I think she was actually an ex lover of his to be honest.
If you’ve yet to hear SOS, check out their track and video for A Challenge to the Dark! I bet you’ll be hooked afterwards. You can also stream and listen to the EP here. Lastly, thank you Jonny, for giving me your answers!
