On December 6, 2012 I attended Massey Hall to witness a stunning performance by Patrick Watson and some of his talented friends. Expecting the show to be astonishing and discovering it to be breathtakingly brilliant, I was not only left with a feeling of awe towards Watson’s musical talent, but I also came across a band that caught me off guard and made the evening extra memorable- The Barr Brothers. Shocked that I had never before heard their music, watching them open for Patrick Watson was the most amazing surprise I could have asked for, and now I am extremely hooked.
Based in Montreal, Brad Barr, Andrew Barr, Sarah Page, and Andres Vial create a team that can really put on a show. I have to admit, prior to this show I had never seen a harpist perform live, and to date it is one of the most magical concert experiences I have had. With powerful melodies and beautiful harmonies The Barr Brothers are definitely worth the listen. Their sound is folky but definitely cannot be contained to this genre; what they do is unique and special.
If you like folk, lyrics that that move like stories, sounds of the soul and vocals that captivate then try something new and check out their website. There you’ll be able to listen to their 2011 release Secret City Records. Every track is worth a full run through, but personal favourites include Old Mythologies and Beggar in the Morning. Enjoy!
