As melodic vocals caress funky basslines, ringing guitars and wicked, heavy drum beats, you can see that Flygone have something extremely grand going on. The group from Coventry have already accomplished a lot in their career. Between their amazing EP Urban Philosophy, selling out venues and supporting bands they love, Flygone are a band to watch out for. With all this excitement happening, Flygone took the time to speak with AMBY about Urban Philosophy, gigging and Power Rangers!
AMBY: Hello Flygone! What has the band been up to lately?
Flygone: Hi Guys! After a short break we’re back on the hype concentrating on writing great songs with a definitive and unique sound as well as gigging around the UK at hopefully some festivals too.
AMBY: As such a young band so early in your career, you’ve achieved a lot thus far- congrats! What’s your proudest achievement to date?
Flygone: Thanks :) I think we have a few achievements we’ve been proud of. Selling out our local venue was a great achievement for us. Another one is when we finally completed our latest EP Urban Philosophy (which is now available on iTunes and Spotify). And probably the greatest is when we supported Cage The Elephant as they have always been one of our musical influences.
AMBY: Once I first heard the ringing guitar in We Hold Together, you had me hooked! How did this song come together?
Flygone: The song came together very quickly. The whole song was written in about half an hour. It all happened in our local practice room (Black Rose Studios). On a Sunday afternoon, after a messy weekend of drinking and partying we had dance music still engraved in our brains. Ryan (drummer) started to pump the bass drum and we just grooved until we found a sound that combined our hard rock edge with a strong dance element. Bradley then added the lyrics which mainly point towards our hometown Coventry.
AMBY: Your EP Urban Philosophy is great. Which tracks are your favourite?
Flygone: Thanks again :) I think we see all of them good in different ways. To play live Phoenix is a great track and it always seems to pump us up and take us up a gear and it always seems to rub off onto the crowd which is always a great feeling. We also like playing Burn it Down as it’s nice to groove to in the verse and we like the amount of conviction we can put across in the chorus.
AMBY: What’s your hidden talent?
Flygone: Nico (Bass) can do an amazing nose trumpet.
AMBY: If you could be any character in fiction, whom would it be?
Jack: One of the Monstars (Space Jam)
AMBY: If you could have dinner with three people, who would they be?
Nico: Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver, Gordan Ramey
Jack: Hitler, Winston Churchill, Gandhi
Bradley: Robert De Niro, Ayrton Senna, Morrissey (I would never want that conversation to end)
AMBY: Which bands would you like to tour with?
Flygone: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Alter Bridge, Linkin Park, Skindred
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
Flygone: There are so many great songs that have come out of 2012. There’s a few songs that got into the UK top 40 that we feel should be remembered including: Gotye- Somebody I Used To Know, Foals- Inhaler, Labrinth- Earthquake, Florence & The Machine- Spectrum (Say My Name) (Calvin Harris Remix), Jay Z & Kanye West- Paris, and Mumford & Sons- Broken Crown.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Flygone that nobody knows yet?
Flygone: We are Power Rangers.
You can listen to We Hold Together below to enjoy this band’s amazing sound. Lastly, I’d like to thank you Flygone, for giving me your answers!
