It’s amazing when bands can define a distinct sound for themselves. And with a light and magical element to their music, Birmingham group JAWS are able to do just that. The band will have a busy 2013 with recent announcements of supporting Tribes along with playing Beacons Festival. So with gigs in the air and great music on the table, JAWS graciously took the time to speak with AMBY about lyrics, favourite concerts and their fifth band member, Pip!
AMBY: JAWS, thanks for taking the time to do this! What’s the band been up to?
JAWS: No problem, not much to be honest, just practicing, writing music, the usual.
AMBY: We have to ask, are you big fans of the fins and film or is there a different significance behind your name?
JAWS: Our name comes from the bad guy from James Bond.
AMBY: You have some shows approaching in the new year with Swim Deep! What’s the best part of touring for you?
JAWS: We can’t wait for that, the best part for me is playing to new people.
AMBY: Your sound gives out a great vibe. What’s the inspiration behind the atmosphere your music has?
JAWS: Thank you, erm I’m not really sure, when I write music though I tend to think about a certain scene from a film or something in my head and put music to it, if that makes any sense.
AMBY: Love the lyrics, “Sunlight burns my eyes, words that I can’t describe. Somehow I believe we are meant to be.” How did these lyrics come about?
JAWS: It’s about those times when you’re sitting on the bus or a train and you see a total babe but then they get off and you never see them again in your life.
AMBY: What are the top three live shows you’ve seen in your life?
JAWS: I’ve been to that many I can’t actually remember, but the first show I ever went to was Panic at the Disco, and that was amazing.
AMBY: What part of the world would you like to play most?
JAWS: America I think.
AMBY: Who do you wish would just go away?
JAWS: People that think sweetcorn is an acceptable pizza topping.
AMBY: Who are the last three artists you listened to?
JAWS: Washed Out, One Direction, Len.
AMBY: If you weren’t in a band what would you be doing?
JAWS: Probably sleeping.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
JAWS: The best song of 2012 was Candy– Robbie Williams.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about JAWS that nobody knows yet?
JAWS: We have a 5th member called Pip, she’s a cat and she does all the work, she’s the only reason that anybody talks to us. They all want to see Pip.
