Wonder Villains are a four piece band hailing from Derry City, Northern Ireland. Combining a knack for writing pop kissed songs with an element of youthful merriment, they have been able to carve out a distinctly addictive sound. Wonder Villains spoke to AMBY about Weezer, always dancing and having their own American Football team.
AMBY: For those who haven’t had the pleasure of hearing you, how would you describe Wonder Villains’ sound in three words?
Wonder Villains: Haha! Groovy energetic pop? That’s what we’d like to think anyway!
AMBY: Who influences Wonder Villains as musicians and songwriters?
Wonder Villains: Occasionally we’ll get really into a band or singer, after watching documentaries or just realising they’re awesome! To name a few, we can all agree that Bruce Springsteen, ABBA, Katy Perry, Weezer, Fleetwood Mac and Blondie are BRILLIANT. We actually have songs about Bruce Springsteen and Debbie Harry! But we also have songs about Zola and Peter Petrelli from Heroes, so just whatever we’re into at the time!
AMBY: How would you describe the music scene in Northern Ireland?
Wonder Villains: Really friendly! It’s great because the music scene is still relatively new, so everyone’s really helpful and nice to one another, especially in Belfast. The Oh Yeah Centre is just a big red building full of awesome people with studios and practice rooms! As soon as you walk in you meet someone who’ll give you great advice and help you out. If you want to do this band thing in Northern Ireland, it’s not hard to find support.
AMBY: What is the craziest thing to happen to you at a gig?
Wonder Villains: We once played on the forecourt of a hamburger place outside of Austin, Texas. It was in quite a suburban area and it had been converted from an old 50′s style gas station. It was a crazy experience in itself, one of those, “Woah, we’re in the USA!” moments. But even stranger was that… the drummer of the other band was Kieran’s doppleganger, except y’know… Swedish! We also got free burgers!
AMBY: If you could create a law that everybody had to follow, what would it be?
Wonder Villains: We must always be dancing.
AMBY: What’s on your iPod at the moment?
Wonder Villains: My iPod is still struggling to adjust to life without Christmas & Crooners. Only Weezer can help us now!
AMBY: Zola is a fantastic song, what is the story behind it?
Wonder Villains: Well thank-you! haha The idea for Zola came about when a new Weezer song was leaked online but there was no music video for it yet so someone posted a video of Zola scoring all these great goals over and over again. After that there was no question that Zola needed a groovy pop song about him! And the rest is history.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
Wonder Villains: My favourite album from age 6-10 was Boyzone’s Where We Belong album. I listened to it every night before bed. Then I turned rock age 11-14 and my favourite album was Green Day’s American Idiot. Nowadays, I’m back on the pop bus with Katy Perry. When I bought One Of The Boys in 2008 it definitely changed my life. Pop all the way!
AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?
Wonder Villains: Most like to be stuck in a lift with Jack Black! School Of Rock is my favourite movie. I think I could talk him into making a School Of Rock 2. I would least like to be stuck in a lift with Beyoncé. I think it would be too much awesomeness for me and I would just explode. Good way to go though.
AMBY: Describe your dream gig and who would be on the bill with you.
Wonder Villains: We would all love to play with Weezer. If that happened I think we could all happily hang up our guitars! We took three questions each from this interview and answered them independently. Every single band member mentioned Weez in their responses, so I think this is a safe answer!
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012 so far?
Wonder Villains: We’re going to give a tie between Two Door Cinema Club – Sun and Beyoncé’s Love On Top.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Wonder Villains that nobody knows yet?
Wonder Villains: Did you know that we have our own American Football team – The Belfast Angels. They’re on twitter (@BelfastAngels). I think we have 7 followers.
Wonder Villains’ lovely track Zola can be heard below, and thank you very much to the band, for giving us your answers!
