There’s a certain four-piece who are really doing their genre of music justice. The Channel are a group pop-lovers of the world need to have in their music library. With soothing, warm vocals and peaceful melodies being carried over aerial synth, their songs really hit the spot. The Channel’s lead vocalist Martyn Bailey spoke with AMBY about their debut album Red Sky Supernova, space rock disco and more!
AMBY: Hello The Channel! What’s the band been up to lately?
The Channel: At the moment we’re real busy working on our debut album Red Sky Supernova recording demo’s and turning them in to the final tracks.
AMBY: How did The Channel get their name?
The Channel: The Channel got its name from a friend of the band and he explained that it was simple and had many meanings, such as we live in the south coast of the UK so it could refer to The Channel as in the ‘English Channel’ or as to when you ‘channel in to something’ or when you tune in to a channel you want to hear!
AMBY: I love your personal biographies on your Facebook page. But if you had to narrow it down, how would you describe your sound in three words?
The Channel: SPACE ROCK DISCO!!!
AMBY: Little Lie has a very relaxed feel to it. Where did the idea for this song come from?
The Channel: Little Lie song idea came from Martyn Bailey (lead vocals) and his life story really in telling little white lies from a child up to now and sometimes it can have great consequences… but still you don’t learn from it. We wanted to get across in the song that when we tell lies we’re sorry and don’t mean it to happen but it just does and still we’re trying to find a way to stop doing it. ‘Who ate that last cream cake in the fridge’ … ‘Err… the Dog!’
AMBY: Which song is the quintessential The Channel?
The Channel: The quintessential song that is The Channel we would honestly say is yet to be made…but the trend and style seems to be there is a darkness in our songs but there is always light too… a ‘sense of hope’ so you get that nice contrast. If we had to say right now from the demo’s we’ve done it would be a song called Night and Day by our guitarist Jol Meredith.
AMBY: If you weren’t in a band what would you be doing?
The Channel: Surfing, full time IT nerd, writing sci-fi novels, painter and decorator
AMBY: Who are some of the last artists you listened to?
The Channel: Muse, Opeth, Biffy Clyro, The Maccabees, Don Broco, White Lies, The Killers and 80’s legends A-ha!
AMBY: What part of the world would you like to play most?
The Channel: South America… Rio de Janeiro :)
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
The Channel: We’re just really excited about making our first album together and then playing it live and seeing how people respond or identify to it!
AMBY: And for our last question, what’s something about The Channel that nobody knows yet?
The Channel: It’s a secret! ;-)
