Fuzzy, groovy and marvelously psychedelic The Hypnotic Eye are a band that should be on your radar. Based out of London, these flower punk darlings make gloriously trippy music. With their new single Satisfaction out and an album in the works, The Hypnotic Eye spoke to AMBY about the Fuzz Wah incident, beautiful artwork and more!
AMBY: How would you describe The Hypnotic Eye’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Lindsay: I put on a lot of shows around Richmond. Giorgio Gomelsky was a hero of mine. I wanted to continue his work. The band created itself and the idiosyncrasies which followed was what the music became. I love Joe Meek. I love what the Black Lips did. I love John’s Children. I think we’re very lucky that a lot of our piers for whatever reason they just get it. Looking where we’re headed I just don’t know how to relate it. This music resembles us.
AMBY: Where did the name The Hypnotic Eye come from?
Lindsay: The George Blair film holds all the energy that certainly got me going. The cable network show is such a great archive too. It’s just energy and fuzz.
AMBY: Satisfaction has such a groovy feel to it, what is the story behind the song?
Lindsay: I’ve always liked the words of Pearly Queen – Traffic, and our song started off with quite a similar bouncy feel, but Will and I made it a lot faster and fuzzier! I like how it turned out.
AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?
Matt: Number 4 could be answered with the calamitous incident of the Fuzz Wah at the single launch. Though it wasn’t really that funny…
Lindsay: Oh, No. My Shin Ei Fuzz Wah had just been repaired. It was the night of the launch of Marianne at cave. It just started to cut out. There were just so many people there I became fixated by negative power. I think the hole in the wall caused by the pedal in-flight could possible be held as a reflection of my feelings.
AMBY: What does the band have planned for 2013?
Lindsay: The release of our first Album, a brand new single in September with a video I am so excited about!
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
Lindsay: With John’s Children & we just played it! Actually maybe Wimple Winch. Dee belongs out there, I think it’s time.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Lindsay: You guys have to check out The Frowning Clouds. I think it’s going to be a great year for them too.
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
Lindsay: Pete Townshend, Andy Ellison and Brian Jones. I don’t think any of them eat though.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Lindsay: First thing on our agenda is recording the sitars for album 2. We’ve got some big ideas for recording them as per the strings on Eleanor Rigby with a Fairchild compressor! We just put a Leslie speaker in a swimming pool. I’ll let you know how it goes!
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Hypnotic Eye that nobody knows yet?
Lindsay: We’re working on some beautiful artwork for the inside cover of our LP at the moment. It’s going to be a Vinyl Only affair and our most limited release yet.
Thank you The Hypnotic Eye, for giving us your answers!
