betsBets has just released her debut self-titled EP. With a lovely voice and marvelous songs, it is a fine first release from a burgeoning talent. After a few plays of Rooftop Lover, you will be hooked too. AMBY spoke to Bets about daily meditation, her first music video and who she’s been listening to.

AMBY: How would you describe Bets’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Bets: I’m a singer/songwriter who makes indie pop rock.

AMBY: You have just released your self titled EP Bets. How was the experience making it?

Bets: Making my first EP was hard and amazing at the same time. I feel like the more I make music the more I figure myself out in a sense.

AMBY: Rooftop Lover is such a cool song, what is the story behind the song?

Bets: I originally wrote Rooftop Lover about my friend and I who love writing and playing music on a specific roof in Hollywood, we started calling ourselves the Rooftop Lovers.  And then, with that name, the tune turned into its own sad love song about looking down at the world from above, feeling disconnected, wondering and waiting for love.

AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?

Bets: I guess I wouldn’t mind being stuck in an elevator with the guy that I’m into right now…that could be kind of fun. But, other than that, being stuck in an elevator with anyone sounds pretty rough.

AMBY: What do you have planned for 2013?

Bets: 2013 is already a really exciting year for me. Just released my EP, had a recording gig in Paris, will be playing during SXSW, about to release my first music video, and will be recording my full album. So, my plan is to keep doing what I’m doing and hoping for some more.

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Bets: This changes often, but on my drive this morning I was listening to Beach House, Lykke Li and The xx.

AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?

Bets: It’d definitely be cool to do a gig with any of the artists I just mentioned.

AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?

Bets: Can I bring four? Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Nina Simone, and Bob Dylan.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Bets: I’m just excited to keep writing music.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Bets that nobody knows yet?

Bets: I meditate everyday.
