Life In Film are an exciting quartet coming out of London. With chiming guitars and full out melodic choruses, music lovers will welcome this band with open arms. With a terrific EP Needles And Pins and a new album out this year, this was the perfect time to see what 2013 has in store for the band. AMBY spoke to Life In Film about fights on boats, touring the new record and working with legendary producer Stephen Street.
AMBY: How would you describe Life In Film’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Life In Film: Jangly guitar music with melodies made for swooning.
AMBY: You have just released you new single, Cold Wire. What does the band have planned for 2013?
Life In Film: We’re probably looking at another single and then we’ll be bringing out the album and touring it everywhere that’ll have us. We had a quiet year last year signing our deal and finishing the album so we’re looking forward to getting out and seeing some people.
AMBY: Needles & Pins is a terrific song, what is the story behind it?
Life In Film: It’s a song about lost love. I guess that’s pretty explicit in the lyrics. Musically though I guess it worked its way into something quite expansive – once we had a nice groove going on it was possible for us to keep it quite spacious, with guitar and bass details coming in and out. It all came together quite naturally from a basic idea which we gradually developed. We treated each tune in isolation and tried to find the musical context which fits it best. In the studio we tried to capture a natural sound, and I think this comes across on the EP and gels it together well.
AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?
Life In Film: We played on a boat on our last tour. A fight kicked off in the middle of the show and the bouncer was dragging the naughty people out and throwing them back on to dry land. Not that we condone that sort of thing but it was quite funny to watch.
AMBY: How did Stephen Street come to be involved with producing the band’s debut record?
Life In Film: We sent Stephen some demos and asked to do a couple of tracks with him. He was up for it and when they went well we decided to do the whole album together which was an amazing experience. He’s a great person to work with and seemed to be coming from the same place as us so it just worked perfectly for this record.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
Life In Film: ANVIL
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Life In Film: I got quite into the Allah-Las album. It’s got a cool style to it.
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
Life In Film: Davey Jones, Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith. Can I get a plus 4? If so I’d invite Peter Tork. It would be great to have the whole gang together again.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
Life In Film: Did Bowie slip in before 31st December? If so then Where Are We Now.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Life In Film that nobody knows yet?
Life In Film: We always drink 2 bottles of water before a show. It’s not for hydration, it’s just a rule we have.
Thank you very much Life In Film, for giving us your answers!
