London’s Garda are all about writing creatively crafted songs with choruses that’ll ring in your mind for days. Comprised of Lee Burgess, Rob Pyne, and Scott Thomson, Garda are taking the “best bits of all the good bands” to create a fantastic sound of their own. The band’s music comes across as extremely heartfelt, a quality that comes naturally to these lads. So with the instant connection we had with their music, Garda’s Lee Burgess took the time to speak with AMBY about the reincarnation of guitar music, recording, and their busy year ahead!
AMBY: Hey Garda, tell us a little about yourselves!
Garda: Hey, well… We are a 3 piece band from London, with Myself (lee) on vox and guitar, rob on bass and Scott on the drums. Good mates outside of music so for us to now be in a band together it has been really easy for us to start hitting things hard straight off the bat.
AMBY: You state your influences as “best bits of all the good bands”. Who are the good bands to you?
Garda: Ha, if you asked us all individually I’m sure you’d get 3 different answers but saying that we have all been influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Beatles. Though I guess as I write the songs I think they take more from my influence which would be The Beatles, Radiohead and maybe a bit of Interpol. Mixed bag I know but it really works and with the 3 of us applying the rights touches at the right times.
AMBY: All of Garda’s songs flow together perfectly. We know the outcome of recording is great, but what’s the vibe like in the studio?
Garda: Honestly, it’s really relaxed. Rob and Scott are such great musicians they make everyone’s life a breeze. They put their parts down in no more than 2 takes!! So there is no worrying about time running out ect. But to answer your question, we have all been in other bands before but all agree that we are on to something here and that we are all vibing off what each other is doing. Couldn’t ask for anymore.
AMBY: If Tomorrow Comes is a seriously good song. What’s the story behind it?
Garda: Awwww nice one, glad you like it. It’s about a few things but mainly togetherness. In the way that we as people don’t do enough for each other. “If you asked one in nine of us to stand up” how many would?? But the chorus is just about living for the moment and not worrying to much in the way of what others think.
AMBY: Garda’s first headlining show was in December. What does the band have planned for 2013?
Garda: Well, new EP, album, videos and more gigs!! Haha busy year!! Last year was the ‘ getting started’ phase so this year will be the work I guess and trying to reach more people.
AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
Garda: Listen to us!!! Haha. We run a tight dictatorship!!
AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?
Garda: I dunno….there is a lot of bad shit out there!! Probably something from those reality tv shows….really really awful!!
AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?
Garda: Scarlett Johansson haha easy!! Only joking…. Noel Gallagher would be a great one. Lots of stories and a really funny bloke. Least….probably some like simon cowell. Absolute weapon!!!
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Garda: The reincarnation of guitar music!! It’s taken awhile but the bands seem to be getting more airtime and real music seems to be charting well now. The release of our record too.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Garda that nobody knows yet?
Garda: You are gonna love us!! x
Thank you so much Garda, for giving us your answers!
