The first time I came across Royal Hoax was through their video for Shiver Shake, and I instantly loved them. Honestly, I’m not sure whether it was the fact a giant giraffe was dancing around a mall, or because I enjoyed the song so much. Either way, both aspects were fantastic, and once you discover the band even more, you’ll find all their songs have this same, lovable element to them. Royal Hoax took the time to talk with AMBY about the cheeky story behind their name, selling albums, and Shiver Shake!
AMBY: How would you describe Royal Hoax’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Royal Hoax: Eclectic. Every song has its own identity. Right now we classify it as Alternative/Pop/Rock. However, some tracks could be even classified as “Grit Pop”, where the deeper Detroit soul and work ethic meets Brit Pop.
AMBY: What has the band been up to lately?
Royal Hoax: We’ve been selling a ton of physical albums, playing gigs, and serving a deeper purpose with our music by feeding those in need in Michigan through a foodbank called Gleaners. Right now, we are approaching 7,000 physical albums in Metro-Detroit.
AMBY: Who is your must follow on Twitter?
Royal Hoax: We don’t really follow anyone on Twitter, but, if George Carlin was still alive, and for that matter if he would even have a twitter, it would be quite hard to resist.
AMBY: How did the wicked concept of the giraffe in the mall come about in your music video for Shiver Shake?
Royal Hoax: Well, Jake was that same giraffe for Halloween and it was a smashing success. So we decided to fully capitalize on the potential of that long necked mac daddy.
AMBY: What do you have planned for 2013?
Royal Hoax: To have 2,000,000 people know about our music in the UK for starters.
AMBY: Shiver Shake rocks and has been getting a lot of plays with us. Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Royal Hoax: We’ve been listening to Foals new record, we’ve also taken interest in a band called Half Moon Run (they’re gonna be big!). And, we’ve been going back to our roots, a lot of 90’s alternative and 60’s pop.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
Royal Hoax: If Oasis got back together, definitely them. Also, we would feel priviledged to open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
AMBY: Where did the name Royal Hoax come from?
Royal Hoax: It comes from 3 major things. The first is brothers Mark and Jake have the last name Hoke. There’s two Hokes in the band. So, Hoax is spelled differently, making it a Hoax within itself. Next, there are many things in this world that have a different purpose/meaning then they appear. Lastly, since our music is eclectic, you may think that after listening to the first 2 songs it’s going to be a Rock/Alternative album. But, once you get to track three, it turns on you, almost as if you were being Hoaxed.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Royal Hoax: Coming over to see you cheery lads in the UK!
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Royal Hoax that nobody knows yet?
Royal Hoax: Well, probably our music. So, check out our Shiver Shake music video. Oh, and that someone can actually learn how to do the Shiver Shake. You can learn that here: www.shivershakeit.com
