Broken Hands are a group from Canterbury, Kent comprised of Dale Norton, Jamie Darby, Thomas Ford, and Callum Norton. The first track we ever heard by Broken Hands was If You Need To Lie. The track immediately showed its appeal with hypnotizing vocals and an amazing hook-laden chorus! AMBY knows this is a band people should be keeping an eye on, so we spoke with Broken Hands about plans for 2013, their upcoming full-length record, and the fact that they share bath water!
AMBY: How would you describe Broken Hands’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Broken Hands: We couldn’t ourselves, favorite blurb by a friend was “Portishead raise a child fathered by Black Sabbath.”, but there was also “A pissed off Verve”, So, swings and round-a-bouts. We enjoy the popular sounds from the british blues boom era, right up to modern desert rock numbers.
AMBY: If You Need To Lie is such a wicked tune, what is the story behind the song?
Broken Hands: Denial is the key aspect, if you need to lie to yourself & to everyone else about your sexuality.
AMBY: The Quadrangle Session Live E.P captures the intensity of the band. How essential is playing live?
Broken Hands: It’s everything to perform with every ounce of conviction you have, for people that take stock of your music. That hear a tie to their woes/elation within your output. An album is a moment in a bands career, but every show has the potential to become famous in themselves and everyone has their favorite Nirvana show. (We like the one at Brixton? Hammersmith? The one with those 90’s dancers each side of the stage).
AMBY: Is there a studio album in the works yet?
Broken Hands: ‘Tis
AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?
Broken Hands: Rachel, Monica & Phoebe / @Willmtthws
AMBY: What do you have planned for the rest of the year?
Broken Hands: Shows, shows, shows and working on the debut effort. This year really is all about meeting as many ears as humanly possible, disregarding any negative feedback and ploughing on merrily.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
Broken Hands: Off the top of my head… AA Bondy is busking outside the venue, The Vasco Era warm up, My Morning Jacket take over next with a guest solo from the late Paul Kossoff, Nick Cave & the Seeds and Sly & the Family Stone are playing and PJ Harvey is just walking round in heels enchanting men.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Broken Hands: The second Unknown Mortal Orchestra record, The who BBC sessions, Garnet Mimms, DZ Deathrays, Willie Hobbs, Anais Mitchell and Radio 2.
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
Broken Hands: I’d invite the other three members of the band.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Broken Hands: Mostly the fruition of our first full length record, we’d love to get over the pond at some point to play some shows in ‘merica and tanning.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Broken Hands that nobody knows yet?
Broken Hands: We share bath water pretty regular.
Thanks so much Broken Hands, for giving us your answers!
