Turnpike Glow are laying down a new format to the indie genre. The London quartet deliver music with a bang as swirling pop melodies are hit with a hint of acrobatic vocal attitude. We’ve taken a real liking to Turnpike Glow, so AMBY spoke with the band about their dream gigs, the story behind their name, and more!
AMBY: How would you describe Turnpike Glow’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Turnpike Glow: One blogger once declared we sound a bit like if ‘Phoenix’ and ‘Broken Social Scene’ were tossed together into a blender. It’s fine by us.
AMBY: Where did the name Turnpike Glow come from?
Turnpike Glow: We are fans of Belgian band dEUS, particularly of their early stuff. A dEUS gig setlist was hanging on the wall like a trophy in our room during our university years. They have a tune named ‘Theme From Turnpike’. We added ‘Glow’ because we thought it had a ring to it and it seemed to carry a vivid imagery. It used to make a lot of sense at the time
AMBY: The Turn, The Pike and The Glow has such a cool feel to it, what is the story behind the song?
Turnpike Glow: Firstly, thanks. The song was inspired by ‘Inside Job’, an enlightening documentary on the recent financial meltdown and on how we got there. It’s an ironic take on greed and moral bankruptcy.
AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?
Turnpike Glow: An episode which occurred before moving to London, while we were still playing the Roman indie scene a few years ago. The sound engineer made himself scarce as soon as we started our set. His favourite team AS Roma were playing a Champions League game that night and he could not help it. True story.
AMBY: What does the band have planned for 2013?
Turnpike Glow: We’re in the process of mixing new material which we’re really excited about. It should be released soon. And then we just want to play as many shows as possible.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
Turnpike Glow: A reformed The Beta Band supporting Flaming Lips.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Turnpike Glow: Django Django, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Flying Lotus, Tame Impala. And endless hours of The National.
AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?
Turnpike Glow: ‘It’s My Life’ – Bon Jovi
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Turnpike Glow: Phoenix have a new album out. Can’t wait
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Turnpike Glow that nobody knows yet?
Turnpike Glow: Our guitarist Tom does some weekend moonlighting as a fishmonger.
Thank you Turnpike Glow for giving us your answers!
