Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Fight Like Apes

Fight Like ApesI remember the first time I heard Fight Like Apes… Their song Something Global hit me harder than a jawbreaker. I mean seriously, the vocals had so much power and impact, and the music really created a welcoming atmosphere. Fight Like Apes are a band who express their clever thoughts through cheeky lyricism and wicked music. Luckily for us, Fight Like Apes took the time to answer a few questions for us. So have a read where we talk all things Fight Like Apes!

AMBY: How would you describe Fight Like Apes’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Fight Like Apes: I always hate this question. I always sound like a dick head when I answer it. People, please listen to our music and tell me what we sound like so I can have an answer for this in the future? I would genuinely appreciate that.

AMBY: You released your last album The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner in 2011. What are your feelings about the record now that you’ve had time to reflect on it?

Fight Like Apes: It’s such a strange thing, the different phases you go through with an album. I have gone through every single emotion with that second. I’ve hated it, I’ve loved it, I’ve been obsessed with it. At the moment I love it.  It’s perfect for where we were at the time and it’s so different to the latest one we’ve finished recording which is great.

AMBY: Which three songs are essential Fight Like Apes?

Fight Like Apes: Battlestations, Jenny Kelly and Jake Summers.

AMBY: Lend Me Your Face is a killer song, what is the story behind it?

Fight Like Apes: Some guy came up to us before and told us it was his and his new wife’s ‘song’. Like ‘their song’. Someone should give that poor woman a heads up cos it’s about tearing a girl’s face off.  He’s gonna kill you in your sleep.”

AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?

Fight Like Apes: That no one is allowed to come up with stupid laws, like ‘no pants Tuesdays’, or ‘silly hat Wednesday’s’ or ‘Everyone’s a pirate’. That really grinds my gears. I hate pirates.

AMBY: What does the band have planned as far as a next release goes?

Fight Like Apes: We’ve just joined forces with the awesome guys at Alcopop Records and we’re going to release an EP with them in May. It’ll be a little foreword for the album to give people an idea of what we’re at. So excited about that. They’re really passionate about what they do and who they work with. Great tour to go with it!

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Fight Like Apes: Can’t get enough of Metronomy at the moment. The new My Bloody Valentine album is amazing. Check out Le Galaxie, an Irish band. They’re the best ever.

AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?

Fight Like Apes: So. Many. Songs. I’m in a really good mood and thinking about an answer for this will put me in a bad mood. Do you mind if I don’t?

AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?

Fight Like Apes: So. Many. Things. I fell off the stage before and hit a wooden barrier thing and broke it with my head but I was fine and just kept singing and I’m still alive so I think it was grand. But it was gas. No video footage unfortunately.

At the end of a song one time Jamie did a Diva storm off stage and went to epically exit the stage through I door but face planted into a wall instead. Amazing.

A guy gave Jamie shit recently after a gig saying we played for too long???! That’s hilarious. Like, too short I get. I understand people getting annoyed about that. But too long? Fucking leave!!

AMBY: How would you define success for yourselves as a band?

Fight Like Apes: Being able to constantly tour and record would be the most amazing thing. Having crowds around the world to play to. Such a typical answer but tis the truth.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Fight Like Apes: Getting back touring with new music and a new excitement about it. We’ve missed it so much. This year is gonna be great for us. I think. Isn’t it???

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Fight Like Apes that nobody knows yet?

Fight Like Apes: We’re unbelievably good at table tennis.

Thank you Fight Like Apes, for giving us your answers!
