Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Best Friends

Best FriendsEd Crisp, Jack Collister, Lewis Sharman, and Tom Roper are Best Friends. Get it? ;) This Sheffield four-piece are quite fabulous.  Their song Surf Bitches proves just that- the song completely makes you want to ride a musical wave with the band. AMBY spoke with Best Friends about “shorts weather”, wanting to be impossible on Google, touring with Swim Deep, and more!

AMBY: Hey Best Friends! How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Best Friends: I suppose garage rock covers it. Most of our music has been quite poppy so far but we’ve been writing some new songs recently and I think it’s a bit different to the stuff we’ve done before, it’s slightly heavier.

AMBY: Who influences the band as musicians?

Best Friends: We’re all into different kinds of music – bands I think we can agree on though are Deerhunter, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Pixies… we all love The Black Tambourines too who are from Cornwall. We get to play together sometimes and it’s always an intense yet extremely pleasurable experience.

AMBY: How did the band come up with the name Best Friends?

Best Friends: We were originally going to be called Sunshine Melt because of our passion for sandwiches and all things that have cheese on, preferably grilled. Best Friends was the first thing we thought of and we wanted to be impossible to Google.

AMBY: Now I have to ask about your track Surf Bitches, what a rad tune! What’s the story behind it?

Best Friends: It’s about not really having anywhere to go, so you’re on your own at the beach. Then it starts bloody raining and all you want is for it to be a nice day, but you don’t want to go back to where you were cause its boring. Its about coming to the realization that if you had a peppermint island you’d be super fresh and beautiful women would want to make love to you. It’s about everything and nothing.

AMBY: What’s a lyric you’ll never get enough of?

Best Friends: ooh ee ooh ah ah ting tang wallawallabingbang

AMBY: You recently toured with Swim Deep, how was that experience?

Best Friends: It was really cool, the shows were full of people that just seemed to want have a good time. They’re the best people to play to.

AMBY: What’s next for Best Friends?

Best Friends: Just play as many shows as we can and keep writing songs, we’d love to try and do some of Europe at some point, that would be awesome.

AMBY: If you could tour with anyone, who would it be and why?

Best Friends: The Original Sugababes, or Cradle of Filth.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Best Friends: We have a thing in the UK that we call “Shorts Weather”; that time of the year where it’s warm enough to wear shorts. It lasts about a week and we can’t wait.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Best Friends that nobody knows yet?

Best Friends: Tom won Norfolk Bowler of the year in 2009.

Another great band from Sheffield – it’s nearly “shorts weather” now.
