Liverpool’s The Dirty Rivers rock. I’d have to say that Yaz put it best in a You’ve GOT to Hear This– The Dirty Rivers have “more grooves than a truck tire”. Still buzzing off their wicked song Black Heart/Filth, AMBY wanted to learn more about the band. So we spoke with The Dirty Rivers about wearing Firebird Adidas Trackies, amazing voices, and how they are going to be MASSIVE!
AMBY: How would you describe The Dirty Rivers’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
J: We suppose it’d be a bit ‘Garge Rock’ with a punky yet melodic side…. you’d have to judge for yourself!
AMBY: Where did the name The Dirty Rivers come from?
J: It came from a brainstorming session between Jay and Mike a few years back. The influence was really down to the river merseywitchseperatesWirral and Liverpool which is where we are all from.
AMBY: Black Heart/Filth is a fine song, what is the story behind it?
The Dirty Rivers: It was originally two separate songs, Black Heart & Filth. They were always next to each other in the set and one day in rehersals Ben the drummer just went straight into the beat! So with the songs being in the same key we just thought it would a cool thing to do live, next thing we knew we were in the studio doing it back to back! It would just be weird playing them separate now.
M: Blackheart is about betrayal/ being let down. Filth is about a dream where I’m being chased by a killer and can’t get away.
AMBY: What does the band have planned for 2013?
J: Mainly it’s about getting out of Liverpool and gaining some notoriety around the country. Hopefully get on the festival scene too. Black Heart/Filth will be our first release, out on the 25th February, with a couple more to follow before the we release our album towards the end of the year or early 2014.
M: Getting our band known around the country and playing as many shows as possible
AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
M: All pets must wear glasses and all people must wear hats. There are not enough hat wearers in the world!
R: Everyone must have a bird of prey and carry them at all times!
B: Everyone must wear Firebird Adidas Trackies.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
J: The Stones…suppose that supporting a massive band like The Rolling Stones would amazing or equally playing with the bands that inspire us on a festival bill.
M: The Stones.
B: Public Enemy.
R: The Beatles.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
J: Jake Bugg, been listening to all sorts at the moment, there are a lot of really good bands emerging like Deap Vally, Drenge & Jake Bugg who are really helping to revive the guitar music scene. Also the new BRMC track is out and we’re looking forward to the album as half of us are going to see them next month.
M: Ennio Morriconi, Mark Robeson (ole man river) amazing voice….
B: Black Angels,Tthe Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane.
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
J: Just 3 people? Hard to choose between 5 of us! My Top choices would be Al Capone, Diago Maradona, Biggy Smalls.
B: Flavour Flave, John Bonham, Snoop Dog.
R: George Harrison, Sharon Stone, Robert De Niro.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
J: The one that really sticks in my minds Lonely Boy by The Black Keys.
B: Still Life by The Horrors
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Dirty Rivers that nobody knows yet?
The Dirty Rivers: We are going to be MASSIVE!
