Ever wonder what happens beyond the stage? Well we do. These roadies, managers, guitar techs, lighting directors, A&R, and even positions you may not have known about make the music you love come alive! So, we spoke Stuart Breadner to to see what sparks he sets off behind the scenes of our favourite bands!
AMBY: How did you first get into your industry?
Stuart Breadner: I had a part time Cafe job after I graduated which quickly became full time. Every Saturday the same customer would send her plate back because of something silly, too much lettuce etc. If the customer wasn’t happy, it was company policy to make the whole plate again.
So after the third time she sent it back for not enough tomatoes, I told her to go Fuck herself and walked out. I decided on the bus ride home, having never owned a video camera or been to film school, that Music Videos might be fun. I owe that bitch everything.
AMBY: Explain to people what you do.
Stuart Breadner: It boils down to taking the bands idea or the concept of the song and translating it into something exciting that people have never seen before.
AMBY: Which bands are you currently working with and which have previously worked with?
Stuart Breadner: We like mixing it up. We’ve worked with everyone from Sony, Universal, Mercury to completely Unknown Bands. This month we’re blowing stuff up with Skippy Dyes, going 70’s with Cape Buffalo and getting abstract with Verse Metrics.
AMBY: You have a very cool, unique style with the way you shoot your music videos. Who inspires your work?
Stuart Breadner: I collect pictures of different kinds of Art I like in a folder which I try to look through every day, coming close to 6000 images. I think the greatest part of the Internet is being able to see something brand new & mind blowing every day, it’s constantly inspiring.
AMBY: What is the craziest work related thing to happen to you?
Stuart Breadner: When I nearly killed Make Sparks http://youtu.be/dtisT5L92BM
AMBY: What are some of your favourite moments while being on set?
Stuart Breadner: Favourite moments are always the happy accidents of discovering something you didn’t plan on, when all the video preparation goes out the window and we just let it happen.
AMBY: What do you do for fun outside of work?
Stuart Breadner: I love Snowboarding, it’s the only thing I think I was born to do. I’m going to have an interesting retirement.
AMBY: What is the best and worst thing about your gig?
Stuart Breadner: Best thing, seeing your stupid daydreams become reality in a matter of weeks. Worst thing, it’s a life consuming passion.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
Stuart Breadner: ‘Francis the Mute’ by The Mars Volta. The greatest Rock album ever made.
‘Graveyard’ by Graveyard, hearing the opening vocals to Lost in Confusion is like being kicked in the face. The greatest album Black Sabbath didn’t make.
‘Goodbye to Romance’ by Melody Club. Abba with Balls.
AMBY: Tell us about your love for Hall & Oates. (More so Hall)
Stuart Breadner: Most successful musical duo of all time and terrific haircuts, what else do you need? For the record I do like Oates too, I’m just making him work for my love.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about you that nobody knows yet?
Stuart Breadner: I can’t do a forward roll.
Thank you Stuart, for giving us your answers!
