AMBY have been long-time fans of Sussex’s Mumm-ra. One of our favourite songs would have to be Mumm-ra’s She’s Got You High. And to make things even crazier for us, These Things Move in Threes is an album we absolutely cherish in our music collection. So, with excitement to see what the band’s been up to, Mumm-ra humbly took the time to speak with AMBY about new names for the upcoming album, excitement for Travel Lodge, and “that stupid fucking duck”!
AMBY: Hello Mumm-ra! How is everybody doing?
Mumm-ra: Well we’re all alive and in good mental health. We are well thanks.
AMBY: It’s great to have some new music from the band. When will the new album be released and what will it be titled?
Mumm-ra: You know, as has always been the case with Mumm-Ra we sort of started running before we can walk. I’m not sure if we’ve got an album in us but there are a collection of 10 or so really good tracks that never saw the light of day. The plan is to find some time around easter to get a few of them down and give them the home they deserve.
As for title, I’m not sure…’Back from the dead’ feels appropriate somehow….or ‘Mumm-ra – She bought you pie’ Answers on a postcard.
AMBY: Technicolour is a nifty little track, what is the story behind the song?
Mumm-ra: Well basically what happened is Gareth ‘The Rock’ Jennings, drummer extraordinary and big mouth told people we were going to do an ep before half the band knew we were going to do an ep. That stirred some public interest, frankly a lot more than I expected, so I figured I’d lay down a little acoustic track for as a taster before we can get into the studio. I wrote it back in 2007 but only recorded it last month in my home studio…it’s lovely. It’s about love despite yourself, opposites attracting and all that jazz.
AMBY: Speaking of the new album, what was the best moment you had while recording it?
Mumm-ra: It’s not recorded yet. It’s written. But I guess it couldn’t have been that much fun…we did split after all
AMBY: What has been inspiring the band’s songwriting on the material?
Mumm-ra: Again, I’m going to have to go back a fair bit to remember, all these songs are 6 years old so if i had to guess. I was reading a lot of JG ballard so I guess a few of them will be about being sexually aroused by car crashes.
AMBY: You did a stellar version of The Cures In Between Days, are there any other songs you would like to cover?
Mumm-ra: Well there are billions of great songs in the world but I’ve always preferred the process of writing my own. Covers are for YouTube singers these days.
AMBY: Change is unavoidable, what is the one thing about Mumm-ra that will never change?
Mumm-ra: That stupid fucking duck probably.
AMBY: What does the band have planned for the rest of the year?
Mumm-ra: Not a lot. We have no label/management/agent/press/radio plugger or publisher. I guess we record the ep and see where it goes.
AMBY: What would a movie based on the band be called?
Mumm-ra: We made one, it’s called ‘The Rock’s horror picture show’ and it’s on YouTube.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Mumm-ra: Oli Frost has expressed excitement at the possibility at staying in a Travel Lodge one more time!
AMBY: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
Mumm-ra: Where are you? No, thanks for sticking by us guys. Hope you enjoy the tracks as and when they come.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Mumm-ra that nobody knows yet?
Mumm-ra: Somewhere in the world there are pictures of Mumm-ra naked behind ‘hell’ beer bottles after an ill fated trip to venice. It’s true.
Thank you so much Mumm-Ra, for giving us your answers!
