BAYY take you on an atmospheric musical journey. Their ethereal-shoegaze music allows you to get stuck in a daze as its light noise surrounds you. Being a relatively new band, AMBY wanted to learn more about this Brighton group, and introduce the world to BAYY. So we spoke with the band about what has them excited for 2013, daily epiphanies, and how they “actually fucking hate fish”!
AMBY: Hello BAYY, how’s the band doing?
BAYY: Hey AMBY! The band’s doing great we’re just lazing around for the Easter holidays as we speak but it’s back to business in a couple of days when we head back to Brighton.
AMBY: If you had to describe each band member with one word, what would they be?
BAYY: So this is kind of bias as these words are formed from my opinions of each of us (Angus’ opinion) – Angus: dickhead, Paeris: drum, Max: Eli, Soph: Shredder (I think shredder’s a legitimate word).
AMBY: Doctor is a fine track with great lyrics. What’s a lyric you’ll never get enough of?
BAYY: Thanks a lot we’re glad you like it – errr one of my favourite lyricists is Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, I know Elephant is kind of a cliché but some of the lyrics within the song are pretty awesome for example ‘He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac ‘cos he doesn’t like it looking like he looks back’. I don’t know if it’ll stay with me but they’re pretty cool.
AMBY: What’s the story behind Aquarium?
BAYY: I wrote Aquarium when I was really bored back home in Bournemouth one weekend, I was sat in my brother’s room and I tried to come up with a character I could write a set of lyrics around. I ended up writing it about a guy that works in an Aquarium, whose job is to wear one of those big fish suits and to hand out flyers. The lyrics are basically his daily epiphanies.
AMBY: In our Getting Cozy With… segment you mentioned how the band have big plans for gigging and recording! Care to share the details?
BAYY: Well we’re going to be releasing a new song in the next month and hopefully towards the end of the year we’ll be doing an EP release with someone (someone hasn’t been confirmed yet..). In terms of gigging we’re just playing it by ear really, we’re open to all offers but want to gig mainly around London and Brighton for the time being.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
BAYY: I know me and Paeris (our drummer) have listening to Edmonton’s own Travis Bretzer a lot recently. He’s a really great songwriter that doesn’t take himself too seriously which is always nice. Personally I’ve kind of over played all the Tame Impala material in the recent weeks. And obviously big JT.
AMBY: Which three of your influences would you love to hang out with for a day?
BAYY: I’d like the hang out with Jack Kaye, The Magic Gang and YRRS. They’re the best and you should check them all out.
AMBY: If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
BAYY: I don’t really know much about anywhere so I guess we’ll have to go with the predictable answers – California, Atlanta, NYC?
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
BAYY: We’re really excited to make plans for next year. This is our first year as a band and we’ve got to find our feet and work out what and where we want to go with it. I’m sure the others agree with this. Oh and also the release of Playstation 4.
AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about BAYY that nobody knows?
BAYY: We actually fucking hate fish.
