Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Growlers

GROWLERSThe Growlers combine garage-surf vibes with delightful psychedelicness- it’s a sweet sound. This Dana Point, California five-piece  have just released their latest album Hung at Heart. We wanted to find out a little more about the band, so The Growlers’ vocalist Brooks Nielsen took the time to chat about being stung by bees while playing, Someday, and what they were doing before The Growlers began!

AMBY: How would you describe The Growlers’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

The Growlers:
This is actually not an easy question to answer.  I usually say its got an old rock n roll sound without the sensor. It sounds pretty and lazy and simple with a hint of humor.  A lot of folks call it beach goth.

AMBY: You are about to release your latest album Hung At Heart. What does the band have planned next?

The Growlers: Hey faster more energetic weird Growlers album. Hung at heart was basically a live album.

AMBY: Someday is such an infectious song, what is the story behind it?

The Growlers: Someday is about my chick but it’s a feeling shared by all the Growlers.  A hope we have to get out of poverty and provide for our girls.

AMBY: The video for the song looked like a lot of fun to make. What were some of the highlights during the shoot for you?

The Growlers: I had a lot of fun getting gay with Anthony. I think my chick got jealous. Ha ha

AMBY: What are you favourite lyrics on the album?

The Growlers: I’d pick Beach Rats because it invokes fond memories of my youth on the beach being a shit kid with my old best friend surfing and skating. Before he turned to dope.

AMBY: What would a movie based on the band be called?

The Growlers: Big kids.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

The Growlers: The Congos Heart Of The Congos, Bob Marley And The Wailers Soul Rebels, Captain Beefheart Safe As Milk.

AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?

The Growlers: Got hit with a black dildo someone tossed on stage, and got stung in the throat by a bee while playing.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

The Growlers: Just stoked on touring Europe and Mexico and making another record.

AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?

The Growlers: I’d legalize drugs and wipe out the drug cartels.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Growlers that nobody knows yet?

The Growlers: Matt was in a straight edge band and I was in a white boy reggae band ha ha
