Bill Ryder-Jones has a sweet, gentle, and genuine voice. When I was first introduced to Bill’s music, I was taken aback from how beautiful his sound was. The talent from Warrington, England has taken the time to answer a few questions for us, so get antiquated with Bill as AMBY spoke to him about He Took You In His Arms, life-changing albums, and what he could live without ever hearing again!
AMBY: Hello Bill, how have you been and what have you been up to lately?
B: I’m ok, been dealing with girls which is always fun.
AMBY: You have just released your new album A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart. Which tracks are your favourites?
B: I’m not sure I have any to be honest. I think since playing live I’ve started to enjoy ‘Anthony and Owen’ a lot.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your beautiful song He Took You In His Arms?
B: Well there’s a direct story for me but the themes of the song are quite open ended, loss, desire, sadness. Hopefully it’s quite open to interpretation.
AMBY: You did a splendid cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s The Boxer. Which other songs would you like to cover?
B: There’s a song by Jonny called ‘Circling The Sun’ which I’m thinking of doing live for the next gig. I tend to not think about it really, normally if I’m bored and have been playing a song a bit on my guitar then I’ll just record it.
AMBY: Who influences you as a songwriter and musician?
B: Writers like Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Euros Childs they’re three big people for me.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
B: Dark Side of The Moon – Pink Floyd. Super Ape – Lee Scratch Perry. Barafundle – Gorkys Zygotic Mynci.
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?
B: I’m not sure I’ve ever had fun at a gig.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
B: Teenage Fanclub a lot! Lots of Wu-Tang clan, Ice Cube. I really like Pavement at the minute too. Oh and Iggy Pop and The Stooges and Bowie.
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
B: Nothing exciting. I follow Everton Fc, Go for runs, I read a lot and drink a fair bit too.
AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?
B: God I don’t know. Songs don’t really annoy me all that much, if I think they’re terrible I tend to just not pay attention.
I’d be happy if people would stop singing about swag and game and all that awful American shite.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
B: By The Sea, really excited to do their next record. Also I’m working with two great singers. MiNNETONKA and Otillia.
AMBY: If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
B: Well obviously I’d say the same as anyone else…global egalitarianism, peace etc but if I were to say something more realistic I’d settle for a true election in this country and a complete shake up of Westminster. Oh and an end to state funerals, they cost money and they’re self indulgent.
AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Bill Ryder-Jones that nobody knows?
B: I’m a natural goal scored with bad knees.
Thank you Bill Ryder-Jones, for giving us your answers!
