It is so easy to get lost in the trippy, addictive, and intoxicating world of Psyence. AMBY and this Stoke-on-Trent quartet go way back- we instantly loved the band for their unique and driven psychedelic sound. Releasing their latest track ZEBRA yesterday, AMBY decided to celebrate with our great interview with the band. Have a look, as Psyence spoke to us about science, upcoming vibes, and no limits!
AMBY: Hey Psyence, introduce yourself to AMBY please! Who are Psyence?
Psyence: Psyence are a PSYCHEDELIC Rock and Roll quintet founded late 2011 in Stoke-On-Trent England. Members include Steve Pye-Vocal/Lead Ben Comley-Rhythm Ben Nixon-Synth Jamie Bellingham-Bass and Joe Walsh-Drums
AMBY: Where did the name Psyence come from?
Psyence: Bassist Jay was sat in a mix one time when we were called Give a Funk and spat out ‘Science! but spelt psy for the psychedelic connection!’ It’s stuck from there.
AMBY: The band have a real knack for writing extremely hook-laden and psychedelic tracks. What’s the inspiration behind Psyence’s sound?
Psyence: Tame impala are our main inspirations no doubt about that, we fell in love with them the moment we heard innerspeaker then delving into their back catalogue, Lonerism was the icing on the cake. We saw Pond live at soup kitchen Manchester (Tame impala’s brothers) and that’s how we wanted to act live, they had so much energy and life it was magnificent to watch, we didn’t take our eyes off them. Old music or ‘vintage’ is another main influence on our style, acts such as; Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin to name a few but really it could go on. Our backgrounds consist of some really various sounds, From Ben Comley’s (rhythm) metal phase to Ben Nixon’s (synth) funky rave days, which wasn’t really that long ago!
AMBY: You know my favourite track of yours is Beanstalk. It’s such a killer track! Which Psyence tune is your favourite?
Psyence: Thanks! That’s one of our favourites too! We always get a groove on to it when we play it live. Our favourite at the minute is a tuff one its gotta be between Zebra, because its our newest tune, its the shortest track we have ever wrote but we’ve packed so much into it its insane. Then Medusa ,it’s always there and we always love playing it. The song has a life of its own know we’ve had it for so long.
AMBY: What does Psyence have planned for the year?
Psyence: Loads planned this year, we’re keeping ourselves busy! From organising a single release to printing T-shirts and building a website. We’re also polishing off an album which we only have two more songs to record for. Its making us excited yet at the same time we are determined to put the hard work and effort in background, which is what you’ve got to do!
AMBY: The band have released two ridiculously funky and hypnotizing tracks within the last month- I Often Ponder and Brother. Is this the vibe we can expect from the band with future tracks?
Psyence: You can expect similar vibes to come, however we have some new tracks in the pipeline, which expose a completely new element to Psyence. We are having a lot of fun at the minute creating new tunes. No limits.
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
Psyence: Music is all we have, apart from girls and the obvious ;)
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Psyence: Uncle Acid And The Dead Beats, Shiny Joe Ryan, Jurrasic 5, Gorillaz, Rage Agaisnt the Machine, Bob Marley, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Blues.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Psyence: It’s going well so far, a lot more things to come. Just keep an eye out.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Psyence that nobody knows yet?
Psyence: That would be telling. It would get us in trouble.
Thank you Psyence, for giving us your answers!
