Having been recently introduced to Salford lads The Nankeens I spoke to lead singer Adam Darby to find out a bit more about how the band got together and what they have planned following the recent release of EP Autonomy.
AMBY: The Nankeens were previously two separate bands so how did you get together?
AD: It was just good timing really, we knew each other from being on the same scene and had played shows together. Both bands broke up at the same time so all decided to get together in The Mill for a jam and a few beers and rest as they say is history.
AMBY: Where did the name The Nankeens come from?
AD: Well Nankeens is a type of cotton, we have our own floor in a mill where we rehearse and Nankeens Cotton is something they used to produce back in the day.
AMBY: One of your tracks is called Breaking Bad any relation to the TV series?
AD: Haha yeh it is actually, everyone loves a bit Breaking Bad……I’ve even got the Hair cut/Facial hair combo going on.
AMBY: You recently released EP Autonomy what else do The Nankeens have planned for 2013?
AD: We are hoping to release another DIY/Budget single later in the year but at the same time we should be recording our second EP which we plan to record over 6 months with the aim for a release next year.
AMBY: Who are you listening to at the moment?
AD: I’ve still got my usual go to bands like The Clash, Libertines Joy Formidable and The Maccabees but I’ve been listening to a band called Peace a lot recently.
AMBY: What three albums would be your desert island discs?
AD: Number one would definitely be UP THE BRACKET – The Libertines, then a bit of – Californication – The Red Hot Chilli Peppers then finish off with something a bit different like…..The Wild Hunt – The Tallest Man On Earth.
AMBY: It’s almost festival season time are any of you headed to any this year? And if so who are looking forward to watching?
AD: Well our festival is Isle Of Wight, we go every year. We are also in a competition to play this year’s IOW as well so fingers crossed we can get on that. Maccabees and Bloc Party are who I’m most looking forward to seeing this year.
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
AD: Well all the rest of the band are big into their football….I’m more of a causal fan. I’m into motor sport and also race Motocross although I haven’t had much time to ride this season because the band is so busy.
AMBY: If you could have any superpower what would it be?
AD: I would have to go with invisibility; I could walk into all the right labels and make sure our demos end up on the main man’s desk ha.
AMBY: Last, but never least tell us something about The Nankeens that nobody knows
AD: Well you might not know it from listening to the bass lines he comes up with but our Bass player – Mr Mark Barlow’s – favourite musician is Rolf Harris……
