Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Patterns

PatternsManchester quartet Patterns are creating quite a buzz with their sophisticated brand of guitar driven indie music. Stunningly layered vocals contrasted against thrusting drums and intensely untiring guitars find their way wrapped around contagious melodies to form a unique sound. Buzzing to learn more about the band, AMBY spoke to Patterns about Blood, Van Morrison, and obscure black metal songs.

AMBY: Hello Patterns! Thanks for speaking with AMBY, what have you been up to?

Patterns: We’ve been very much concealed for a long time working on a number of projects that are very close to our hearts. One of which is our album, another of which is KOLLIDE (www.musicalpatterns.com/kollide)  a collaborative project with other Manchester musicians .

AMBY: How would you describe Patterns’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Patterns: It’s almost impossible for us to reflect objectively on our sound as its clearly something we’re too embedded in. What we’ve tried to do is create a synthesis of pop and shoe gaze but there’s so many other things in there that its hard to know.

AMBY: When will we see the release of your debut record and is there a title for it yet?

Patterns: I can’t tell you anything right yet but it will be announced very soon.

AMBY: Blood is a such a great song. What is the story behind it?

Patterns: Blood started off with a visual idea. Ciaran does a lot of experimental video work and the song was born out of these old vhs tapes he found of car rides on the coast. The driving pace of the song and dream like quality of it all started from that point.

AMBY: What’s the best part of being in Patterns?

Patterns: Being able to write and play music you believe in. Also when you play in France they give you red wine and food.

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

Patterns: We once had a stage invasion at Sounds from the other city and this guy from the crowd started just pressing buttons on Ciaran’s sampler. I’m not sure he really knew what it did he just liked the flashing lights. Ciaran had to pull him off it.

AMBY: If you could hang out with any of your influences for a day, who would you choose?

Patterns: Van Morrison although I imagine he’d be an arsehole, which is kind of the problem with amazing musicians they’re often quite troubled. I imagine Peter Andre would be nicer to spend a day with he always seems like such an ernest man.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

Patterns: Van Morrison – Astral Weeks, MBV – Loveless, Animal Collective – Merriweather.

AMBY: If you had to describe each member in the band with one word, which word would define them?

Patterns: Ciaran: Vox, Laurence: Guitar, Alex: Bass, Jamie: VIBEZ

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Patterns: The album.

AMBY: What would a movie based on the band be called ?

Patterns: Dogtooth.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Patterns that nobody knows?

Patterns: All our songs are covers of obscure black metal songs.
