Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ YOUTHBLOOD

YOUTHBLOODYOUTHBLOOD are a talented band with a youthful and fresh vibe, great name, immense debut EP, and fantastic answers. With hook-laden pop choruses that’ll get anyone dancing, we’ve become big fans of their sound. To find out what’s been keeping the group busy, AMBY caught up with YOUTHBLOOD to chat about the dude in the bright green dinosaur suit, getting wasted, and life-changing albums!

AMBY: Hello YOUTHBLOOD, what have you been up to?

YOUTHBLOOD: Hey! We’ve been alright, played the City Sound Project this past Sunday and a handful of other shows. Other than that we’ve just been writing, recording demos and working towards recording some new material to release!

AMBY: How would you describe YOUTHBLOOD’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

YOUTHBLOOD: The YOUTHBLOOD sound is a heavy mix of sweeping surf synth lines chained down by the loudest and dirtiest guitar tones. Mash up of My Bloody Valentine, Tame Impala, Nirvana, Deerhunter and PEACE. Although we have been compared to Vampire Weekend and Alt – J too.

AMBY: What’s the story behind the band’s name? We know you had a change recently!

YOUTHBLOOD: Up until recently we called ourselves Trophys, but the new music and direction we are going in had changed a whole lot since when we first started Trophys. Hence the name change to YOUTHBLOOD, its split a lot of opinions with our fans as people prefer Trophys to YOUTHBLOOD. But we’re sticking with what we think sounds right and fits us as a band. The next batch of songs we release under the YOUTHBLOOD name should help people make sense of the name change.

AMBY: Not Science is wicked. How do you come up with the track?

YOUTHBLOOD: Not Science is an old track that me and Mitch used to jam together about 3 years ago now, we came up with the main guitar line in the song and ended up re vamping it for the EP. We put synths on the track too to help give it our Trophys sound.

AMBY: Your debut EP VVIBES has a great vibe between the synth and playful vocals. Who or what inspired the EP?

YOUTHBLOOD: There was a lot of music that inspired us when we were creating the music and recording the EP. Bands like The Horrors, Blur, Two Door Cinema Club, Is Tropical having a major influence on us. Mainly the EP is just a statement of where we were as a band at that particular point in time. A lot of real life problems and issues managed to surface in the lyrics too.

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

YOUTHBLOOD: One funny thing I can remember is last when we played at Lounge on the Farm festival last year in Canterbury, during out set on the Saturday we played to a lot of people who were sat down on a hill surrounding the stage, family’s included with everyone watching us play. Right at the front of the stage by the barriers, was a dude in a bright green dinosaur suit going absolutely mad for our set! He must’ve been on something awesome because he danced non stop for 30 minutes to our songs, we dedicated a song to him and chatted with him after the show! A lot of crazy things happen at our shows!

AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?

YOUTHBLOOD: If I could create a law that everyone would have to follow, I would enforced the banning of shuffling and get everyone to either two step, pogo or raise their metal horned firsts up into the air at any concert/club/show anything!!

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

YOUTHBLOOD: The three albums which changed my are Tame Impala – Lonerism, PEACE – Delicious, and Nirvana – Nevermind. These three albums inspired me to think more outside of the box, be more creative when writing songs and that no matter how loud, thrashy or psychedelic the songs are sounding, they can still have massive pop chorus’s and get people dancing!

AMBY: What’s next for the band?

YOUTHBLOOD: Well as mentioned earlier, we are working on a few tracks, getting them ready to be recorded in the near future. As well as this we are booking more shows for the summer and hoping to play a few festivals this year!

AMBY: What is the best song of the year so far?

YOUTHBLOOD: So far this year, one of the best tracks I’ve discovered and fell in love with is Dream Koala – Ocean. The track is phenomenal, drenched in dreamy guitars, synths and vocals. OR Toy – Bright White Shimmering Sun, the track echos summer and embodies ever fabricated thought of summer.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about YOUTHBLOOD that nobody knows?

YOUTHBLOOD: We spend more time getting wasted than doing anything else.
