Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ SECRET FIX

SECRET FIXSECRET FIX are a new quintet hailing from Kettering. Their “healthy mix of shoegaze and psych” is overwhelming good as tracks like Kissy Kiss and Paralysed can put you into a complete trance. Check out our interview with SECRET FIX’s Sam Toms as he had a chat with AMBY about breeding exotic stick insects, strobes, and what’s next!

AMBY: Hey Sam, cheers for speaking with AMBY! What have you been up to lately?

SECRET FIX: Hello, thanks for having me. Lately we’ve been staying up late watching Saxondale and eating a lot of pancakes. It’s been really special.

AMBY: How would you describe SECRET FIX’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

SECRET FIX: I don’t like putting things into categories because I’m scared people may get put
off by whatever bullshit genre you make up but if I really had to say it’d be a healthy mix of shoegaze and psych.

AMBY: Who inspires you as a songwriter and musician?

SECRET FIX: Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth for the way they’ve reinvented the guitar. I also love Arthur Russell for his beautiful vocal melodies. Steven Drozd, Velvet Underground, Kevin Shields and Mark Gardner are all up there too. There are so many its hard for me to choose!

AMBY: Your new song Kissy Kiss has a real “badass” feel, as described as one of your SoundCloud fans. We couldn’t agree more! What’s the song about?

SECRET FIX: It’s a bit too personal for me to give a straight answer. I’ve been telling people its about a family I saw on the Jeremy Kyle show but it’s always up to the listener to make their own mind up.

AMBY: Where did the name SECRET FIX come from?

SECRET FIX: I fell in love with a girl who had a boyfriend and she became my ‘secret fix’ for a while but it could be anything really- Phil Collins ballads, Valium, wearing womens underwear… everyone has their own…

AMBY: What’s the best part about being in SECRET FIX?

SECRET FIX: Leaving the strobes on for whole practices to see who has the first seizure.

AMBY: The other day SECRET FIX’s Facebook page comically said “working hard or hardly working?” We’re curious what’s next as far as working on new recordings go. When can we expect to hear some more tunes?

SECRET FIX: We try not to force creativity because it’s easy to get frustrated when nothing comes out. Sometimes we won’t do anything for weeks and other times we write three in a week. Keep watching SoundCloud.

AMBY: What’s the best release of the year so far?

SECRET FIX: Kurt Vile- Wakin on a Pretty Daze. His lyrics and voice make me melt.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about SECRET FIX that nobody knows yet?

SECRET FIX: Between us we have bred exotic stick insects (Sambuca RIP), kept giant African snails (Wellington and Rover RIP) own a Hawk named Tia and 8 chickens all named Patti. We also have an unhealthy obsession with cats.
