Listen up all Torontonians! The lovely Julia Holter will be in Toronto this Wednesday the 17th at The Drake. She is also releasing her third album Loud City Song in August, so to get acquainted with her prior to attending the show, AMBY caught up with Julia Holter to talk about influences, being stuck in an elevator, and business suits!

AMBY: Hello Julia! Thanks for having a chat with AMBY, what have you been up to lately?

Julia Holter: Rehearsing for our tour. We have a bigger band now–cello, violin, saxophone, drums, keys, exciting!

AMBY: You will be releasing your third album Loud City Song in August. What were some of the highlights while recording it?

Julia Holter: It was so fun working with the musicians. Recording them was the first thing we did and it was a special experience for me to hear my arrangements come to life in the studio. Later, Cole (who produced it with me) and I did a lot of production on the performances but you still hear most of the musicians’ performances and they are so full of life and great. I am so indebted to all of the talented people that contributed to the record.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your lovely song World? We love the new video!

Julia Holter: It was the last song I wrote on the record. It was supposed to tie everything together kind of–it introduces the themes of the record.

AMBY: Who influences you as a songwriter and musician?

Julia Holter: A lot of people–Joni Mitchell, Guillaume De Machaut, Robert Ashley, Robert Wyatt

AMBY: Which three of your songs are quintessential Julia Holter?

Julia Holter: No idea!

AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?

Julia Holter: Most–my BFFs, Least–having trouble answering this one which I guess is good.

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

Julia Holter: The first time a lot of people came to see me was definitely the funniest thing that ever happened to me.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

Julia Holter: I don’t know if they changed my life but I love Joni Mitchell Court And Spark, Ariel Pink House Arrest, Roxy Music Roxy Music

AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?

Julia Holter: Walk.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Julia Holter: Writing more music in between touring.

AMBY: If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

Julia Holter: I don’t know.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Julia Holter that nobody knows?

Julia Holter: I’m wearing half of a business suit right now but you can’t tell because of how I’m wearing it.
