Musician, actress, and pop icon Lenka will be playing in Toronto at The Drake tomorrow night (July 24th). This Australian talent has welcomed fans with open arms into Lenkaland, and once you visit you won’t want to leave; her world hugs you with an overwhelming admirable warmth and genuineness. With excitement to review the show tomorrow night, AMBY caught up with Lenka to talk about her latest record Shadows, using her body for geography, and hating skiing!
AMBY: Hello Lenka, thank you for speaking with AMBY! How have you been and what’s new?
Lenka: I’ve been great. Hot! Settling in to New York with the bubba and preparing for the next leg of my tour.
AMBY: How would you describe your music to those unfamiliar with it?
Lenka: I usually say “whimsical, melodic folk-pop”, but it depends who I’m talking to.
AMBY: You recently released your album Shadows! What was the best moment you had while recording it?
Lenka: Being in Woodstock, NY, pregnant, in a barn, singing a song about my unborn child (Two Heartbeats) while the birds chirped outside. I felt very at peace, creative, and free.
AMBY: Which songs are your favourite off Shadows?
Lenka: All of them! They’re all my babies. I love the above mentioned Two Heartbeats because it includes the in-utero doppler heartbeat of the baby. I love No Harm Tonight because it really sounds like a lullaby I’d like to hear myself.
AMBY: The video for Nothing Here But Love is so interesting. How did you come up with the idea to use your body for geography?
Lenka: It was my husbands idea (artist James Gulliver Hancock.) He wanted to create a landscape on a body and shoot it macro close-up. This seemed like a good song to try that with because of the mother nature overtones. It was a challenge and very fun!
AMBY: Does hailing from Sydney, Australia have an influence on your music? And if so, how?
Lenka: Not sure. I developed musically a lot in LA actually, so that may have more influence on my sounds. Sydney-siders are very laid back, so maybe being there for some of this new album payed a part in it’s tone.
AMBY: We know it may be difficult to choose out of them all, but which lyric of yours is a favourite?
Lenka: Take from your shoulders the weight that you don’t need to hold anymore ’cause I’m here. Also: Your shadows will fly away, your ships will sail away. (same song, No Harm Tonight.)
AMBY: Lenka has been featured on many soundtracks in TV and film. If you could choose to have your music featured in any movie or show, which would you choose?
Lenka: Something new that I was a little involved in the creative process. Something whimsical and heartfelt.
AMBY: Your fanbase is incredible and ever-growing. Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
Lenka: You are awesome. Each and everyone of you a special, unique, wonderful person. Thanks for your support and interest.
AMBY: What’s your favourite song of the year so far?
Lenka: I’m diggin “please don’t kill my vibe” for some reason.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Lenka that nobody knows yet?
Lenka: I get so stumped with this question! Um… I have a reconstructed knee from a skiing accident? I hate skiing now.
Thank you Lenka, for giving us your answers!
