San Francisco’s The Dodos released their fifth record Carrier yesterday! I was incredibly happy when I had the opportunity of interviewing the band’s Logan Kroeber; I’ve been singing and swaying along with this duo’s music since the release of their debut studio album Beware of the Maniacs back in 2006. To see what the band’s been up to lately, AMBY spoke with The Dodos about who they’ve been listening to, their North American tour, and Master Chef!

AMBY: Hello The Dodos, what’s the band been up to lately?

The Dodos: We just wrote and recorded another record and have been enjoying some Summer vacation before the big tour starts in September.

AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential The Dodos?

The Dodos: Red and Purple, Longform, Companions? I’m the wrong guy to ask!

AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?

The Dodos: Buddy!

AMBY: Your fifth record Carrier will be released on August 27th. What is the significance behind the album’s title?

The Dodos: That’s my doing. During mixing I was imagining the song Transformer as being an aircraft carrier that held all the other songs on the record, and the word Carrier stuck out to me.

AMBY: Excluding “the”, all of the songs off the Carrier are a single word. Was this methodical or just coincidence?

The Dodos: Coincidence I think. Meric used to pluralize a lot of the song titles (Fools, Beards, Fables etc.) so maybe this is the new trend.

AMBY: Substance is an amazing song. What inspired it?

The Dodos: That beat just came out one day during practice. I think we both thought it was kinda cool, just a little different for us and we moved on. I thought it sounded like Smashing Pumpkins for some reason. Anyways some time had passed from that day and then Meric shows up at practice and asks if I remember that beat. It took me a moment to remember what he was talking about, but it came to me finally and he had this riff all worked out to it and bang, all of a sudden it made sense. It seems to be a favorite for a lot of people.

AMBY: The band soon embarks on a North American tour. What are you most looking forward to?

The Dodos: We’ve got a new member joining us for this tour so I’m looking forward to getting well rehearsed with the new guy and just shredding peoples faces off.

AMBY: Has there ever been a song you wish you wrote? And if so, which song?

The Dodos: It would be pretty rad if I wrote Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny.

AMBY: Who have you been listening to this summer?

The Dodos: Dungeonesse, George Jones, Turquoise Summers, Slayer, Max Roach, Pixinguinha, Gary Stewart, Ike Quebec, Sonny and the Sunsets…

AMBY: What’s the best song of 2013?

The Dodos: The Missing by Deerhunter comes to mind.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Dodos that nobody knows yet?

The Dodos: Meric is trying out for Master Chef!
