On September 16th, London’s younghusband are to release their debut record Dromes. With fetching pop hook-laden tracks like Comets Crossed and Electric Light, younghusband create a psychedelic atmosphere which is easy to get absorbed into. To learn more about the highly anticipated album, AMBY spoke with younghusband’s frontman Euan Hinshelwood about compulsory siestas, influences, joyriding, and a Turkish guy dressed like Elvis.
AMBY: How would you describe Younghusband’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Younghusband: Droning psych pop for the midnight mass.
AMBY: When will your debut album be released and what will it be titled?
Younghusband: It’s out on September 16th on Sonic Cathedral Records and will be called ‘Dromes’.
AMBY: The new single Comets Crossed is such a cool song, what is the story behind it?
Younghusband: It mainly came from improvisation. We were listening to a lot of the Stax records at the time, and pretty heavy psych. The first version was 15 mins long and was just based around the bass-line that is now in the verse breaks. A repetitive vocal phrase was happening. Then my pop sensibilities kicked in and i kind of wrote a song into it.
AMBY: Who inspires you as songwriters and musicians?
Younghusband: Colin Newman of WIRE is a big inspiration. John Cale too. We love his early solo albums. The Velvets generally. FELT. Brian Wilson/The Wrecking Crew. Holland-Dozier-Holland and the Motown guys. CAN.
AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
Younghusband: Compulsory siestas!
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
Younghusband: Joyriding.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
Younghusband: Love – Forever Changes, MBV – Loveless, Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left
AMBY: What would a movie based on the band be called ?
Younghusband: Particle Soup.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Younghusband: Electric Wizard, The Rain Parade, Goat, Ty Segall, Proper Ornaments are a few
AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?
Younghusband: A Turkish guy dressed like Elvis delivering a mixing desk, 3 hours late, 10 mins before doors.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Younghusband: Releasing our album, then touring. We’ve never toured properly, in this band anyway. We’re heading out on tour the day after our album comes out in September.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Younghusband that nobody knows yet?
Younghusband: We nearly changed our name to something unspeakable last year. No idea what was wrong with us. It was almost self-sabotage.
