Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Bloods

BloodsSydney, Australia’s MC, Dirk, and Sweetie are Bloods. This garage-pop trio released their debut EP Golden Fang on August 16th, and AMBY spoke to the band’s MC to learn more about songs they wish they wrote, their artwork, and (of course) Golden Fang!

AMBY: Hello Bloods, what’s the band been up to lately?

Bloods: Hello there! We have just released our debut EP here in Australia. It’s called ‘Golden Fang’ and we’re on tour at the moment, celebrating and promoting its release. We’re also just released a 7″ EP in the US via the amazing folk at Whooping Crane Records.

AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band using one word?

Bloods: Dirk: Chirpy, Sweetie: Spirited,  MC: Focused.

AMBY: Your EP Golden Fang came out today! Which songs off the EP are your favourite?

Bloods: We are all really happy with how the last track ‘Language’ came out. We wrote it just before we went in to record and the first time we ever played it outside the rehearsal room was when we were putting it down. Was a bit of a gamble but seemed to have paid off. I personally really love ‘Back To You’. We just got our 12″ test pressings back and that song in particular sound super sweet on record.

AMBY: No Fun is a wicked garage-pop jam! What’s the song about?

Bloods: I actually wrote that song when Sweetie went away on a holiday for a month. We weren’t rehearsing at all and i was bored, so i just started writing that song with that first line ‘no fun when you’re not around, no fun when you’re not in town’. It then kind of evolved and i really loved the idea of writing an opening song for our set – eventually put it down as the first song of a release. it’s kind of my homage to Sgt Peppers, you know? Like a song that gets people ready for what’s to come. It’s mostly just a fun introduction to what we’re about.

AMBY: The band has some great artwork. Do you have an particular favourites?

Bloods: Tanks heaps! I generally do the artwork for us so it’s nice of you to notice! haha I think we are all really happy with how the cover of our ‘Golden Fang’ EP has turned out. That photo was taken by my husband Dexter and it was really late at night, Sweetie and I both had the flu it was really cold. The restaurant also had a sewerage leak and the smell was horrible! We had to try really hard not to gag while the shot was being taken!

AMBY: Which Bloods’ lyric is your favourite?

Bloods: Probably a line from bodies that I wrote when I was really angry “you are the stone that is burying my bones underwater”. I really like how descriptive it is and how easy it is to relate to. I think everyone has felt that way about someone at some point in their life. I also really like a line from ‘Language’ “too young for you to hear my voice however, I’m just right to fuck”. I think that kinda speaks for itself really!

AMBY: Does hailing from Sydney, Australia have an influence on your music? And if so, how?

Bloods: Yea I think it does. Our lyrics are drawn from our every day lives and I think our attitudes are particularly Australian. We’re pretty relaxed and accepting of the shit life throws at you. Writing about our experiences are how we process things.

AMBY: Has there ever been a song you wish you wrote? And if so, which song?

Bloods: OMG YES! So many songs! Pixies ‘Where is My Mind’, Sleater Kinney ‘Get Up’, Veruca Salt ‘Seether’, Breeders ‘Cannonball’, Bikini Kill ‘Rebel Girl’, Beastie Boys ‘Brand New’ I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS HERE!

AMBY: Which bands or artists have you been listening to lately?

Bloods: I’ve been listening to Mac Demarco quite a bit. I really love his new record 2 and particularly love his lyrics.

AMBY: What’s the best song of the year?

Bloods: I reckon it’s gotta be ‘Wakin’ on a pretty Day’ by Kurt Vile. it’s ridiculously good and goes for 9.5 minutes! I can’t even imagine being able to write a song that long, let alone one as amazing as that one!

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Bloods that nobody knows yet?

Bloods: We’re not really night owls. We’d probably rather eat a pizza and watch a movie somewhere warm over going out most nights of the week.

Thank you Bloods, for giving us your answers!
