Every now and then a band will come along that will blow you away, completely exceeding your expectations. The most recent example of this, for me, is Slaves; possibly the most unique band to come about in the last 5 years. The 2-piece rock band from Kent are already building a reputation as one of the best live bands on the circuit, with their commanding performances leading to almost chaotic crowds.
I was lucky enough to catch an interview with the guys as they have just embarked on their latest tour, where they talked about Japanroids, their love of hip-hop, and beer cake.
AMBY: Slaves! How are you guys and what have you been up to recently?
Slaves: Hi, we are great. We are on tour at the moment; it’s been going amazingly. We’ve just arrived in Newcastle at the brew dog pub and we have been given a beer tasting session and now we are being fed beer cake, it’s pretty great.
AMBY: You guys have one of the most unique sounds out there. How would you define it in laymen terms?
Slaves: Thank you. I think you’ve got to just hear it, and more importantly see us live, to understand. It’s really hard to write a description of what we are, but we like that.
AMBY: Isaac you are possibly the only drummer I have ever seen play standing up! Why did you decide to do that?
Slaves: It was a case of starting a band and not being able to find a drummer. Laurie suggested trying playing a snare and floor Tom and it just worked.
AMBY: Your songs are VERY powerful. What bands would you say influenced your sound?
Slaves: I ( Laurie ) was very influenced by bands like The Husbands and Crass at the time of starting the band, I think that’s where I started my guitar style. It’s since progressed with discovery of bands like the Reatards and Le Tigre. We both also listened to a real lot of hip-hop too.
AMBY: What’s the most bizarre thing that has ever happened to you on the road?
Slaves: This morning we drove past someone we suspect to be a crystal meth addict and his face was really bizarre. It made our driver pull over because he was so upset by it.
AMBY: What artists have you been listening to lately?
Laurie: White Lung, King Krule, Drenge, Japandroids, Etta James.
Isaac: Depeche Mode, Soul 2 Soul, Slick Rick, Can.
AMBY: How would you each describe each other in two words?
Slaves: Laurie (describing Isaac): beautiful hair Isaac: strong socks
AMBY: What’s the best song of the year?
Laurie: Japandroids – House That Heaven Built (literally only heard it this week but its made that much of an impression).
Isaac: Robbie Williams – Candy
AMBY: And finally, what’s something about Slaves that nobody knows yet?
Slaves: We really really love EMINEM.
Thank you Slaves, for giving us your answers!
