Is there room from another new indie band from Birmingham – or B Town, if we must – a scene which has brought us Peace, Swim Deep and Jaws over the last year or so? Kastella are keen to answer that question with a yes. And indeed their bio on their SoundCloud page could describe the whole B Town scene itself: “We’re a band trying to blend everything we love into something you might”.
And with “Nefarious Tricks” the band have done just that. Like the sounds of many of their local contemporaries the track isn’t especially original. But they have taken familiar elements to produce a mid tempo funky indie work out that is probably best experienced live with the bass cranked up to the maximum. Forthcoming gigs in Birmingham and London afford opportunities for this.
With Jack Newbold on lead vocals, Daniel Taylor and Mal Bradd on guitar, Jay Stevens on Bass and Jake Hudson on drums Kastella are worth keeping an eye on – whether as a worth addition to the B Town boom, or as an act that shakes off that tag and carves a course for itself.
