Perth’s Rainy Day Women are about to wrap up their Ain’t It Time? tour. While still touring, A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with the band about their upcoming debut album, Ain’t It Time, being nice to each other, and Tom’s nipples…
AMBY: Hey Rainy Day Women! You’re on your Ain’t It Time? tour. What’s the best and worst part of touring for you?
Rainy Day Women: Hey there! The best part is being with four other smelly guys who are my best friends. The worst part is probably being with four other smelly guys who are my best friends! This tour is our longest tour to date so I reckon there will be some testing moments.
AMBY: Where did the name Rainy Day Women come from? And what other names had you considered for the band?
Rainy Day Women: It’s a Bob Dylan song and apparently it’s also an OC episode. We considered the T- Bangers and Lemon Party.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your 50’s tangled pop track Ain’t It Time?
Rainy Day Women: I’d already written all the songs for our debut album, or so I thought, when the producer Andy Lawson said he thought we needed another upbeat track. Seconds after he mentioned it, the idea for the track came into my mind. I wrote the majority of it on my acoustic guitar that night and then put it together the next night down at a farm in the south-west of WA where we were recording. Because I thought everything was already written for the album there was no pressure and I think that shows on the final track.
AMBY: Your Friends EP was released earlier this year. What are your thoughts on the EP now that there’s been time to reflect on it?
Rainy Day Women: I love it. It was a totally new and honest experience for me. I consider it my experiment on how to write pop music and I learnt a lot from it.
AMBY: Which Rainy Day Women song is your favourite?
Rainy Day Women: There’s a lot on our upcoming album. Probably a song called ‘On Your Side’. ‘Friends’ will always be a favourite for me.
AMBY: Who would be in your ultimate concert line-up?
Rainy Day Women: Alive or dead? If there are no parameters, then it’d probably go like this: Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, The Beach Boys and of course Rainy Day Women.
AMBY: You are allowed to say one sentence which will reach the whole world. What would you say?
Rainy Day Women: Be nice to each other!
AMBY: What’s the best moment you’d had as a band so far?
Rainy Day Women: For me, probably writing the song ‘Friends’. As soon as the idea came to me I knew it was a song I had wanted to write for a very long time.
AMBY: What’s the best song of the year?
Rainy Day Women: Haim – The Wire
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Rainy Day Women that nobody knows yet?
Rainy Day Women: Tom’s nipples are really close together. Sorry Tom.
Thank you Rainy Day Women, for giving us your answers!
