Alister Wright, Heidi Lenffer, Ulrich Lenffer, and Jeremy Kelshaw come together to create the blissful noise which is Cloud Control. The quartet released their second studio album Dream Cave back in September of this year, and have recently wrapped up their Dream Cave Tour. With the announcement of supporting their pals Local Natives on a UK tour, A Music Blog, Yea? caught up with the band’s Jeremy Kelshaw to see what else has been keeping the band busy!
AMBY: Hello Cloud Control, thanks for speaking with AMBY! What’s the band been up to?
Cloud Control: Hi ! Well we are on tour for our second album Dream Cave at the moment. We’ve played a bunch of US & Australian shows already and have just started our UK/European dates.
AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential Cloud Control?
Cloud Control: Wow this is harder than I thought. If you’re new to us, I guess checkout Gold Canary, There’s Nothing In The Water We Can’t Fight & off our new album Dream Cave, Dojo Rising. They are all pretty different and represent different aspects of what we like.
AMBY: Your second album Dream Cave came out on September 17th in America. How did the title Dream Cave come about?
Cloud Control: Al wrote the last & title track on the album, Dream Cave. I heard him say once it’s the kind of song one might sing if they were tapped in a cave and went crazy. One of the titles we didn’t go with was Food, which we all like but I think Dream Cave is more representative. It just works.
AMBY: Which songs off the record are your favourite?
Cloud Control: Aaaaaah no, don’t make me choose, it’s too hard. You should just check the record out and make your own mind up :) I will say that live, Promises is great to play cause it’s one of those songs that is easy to get into on your first listen. It turned out really vibey on the record too.
AMBY: The band has a knack for writing melodic and harmonious songs. What’s a studio session like with Cloud Control?
Cloud Control: Well normally someone starts a song on acoustic or in a laptop and then we try to play it acoustically and get to know the song as a group. This helps us write the harmonies and solidify the melodies. Once we are in the studio, the work we’ve done with the song helps up be spontaneous with the arrangement. It becomes apparent pretty quickly if we are on the right track or not.
AMBY: When I first heard Meditation Song #2, the powerful vocals and lyrics blew me away. Which Cloud Control lyric is your favourite?
Cloud Control: All this choosing between our own music is hard for anyone let alone someone as indecisive as me haha ! Ok, I’m going to go to the cloud control roots and say off our 2009 EP “the one you love is crazy and she doesn’t care”.
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you while on the Dream Cave Tour?
Cloud Control: I punched myself in the face the other day when a bag strap broke. My nose still hurts.
AMBY: While on the theme of touring, what’s the funniest thing to happen to the band at a gig?
Cloud Control: Al once fly kicked Heidi’s keyboard off stage. It was half funny, half concerning.
AMBY: Now we’re putting Cloud Control in full control. If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
Cloud Control: Ok, so I assume creating a law allowing me to create unlimited new laws is not in the spirit of what your going for, and world peace is a bit miss congeniality, so I’m gonna keep it real and declare that we need more live music venues. Too many are getting shut down, they need our support !
AMBY: Which artists did you listen to growing up, and who are you listening to lately?
Cloud Control: I grew up on a staple of Billy Joel & Paul Simon. In my teenage years I listened to Rage Against The Machine and the Prodigy. Lately I have been listening to Big Deal and Dark Bells.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year so far?
Cloud Control: Big Deal – June Gloom.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Cloud Control that nobody knows yet?
Cloud Control: I like sleeping in my clothes.
Thank you Cloud Control, for giving us your answers!
