Aussie quartet Panama recently dropped their three-track EP Always; a collection of songs which have quickly earned the EP a spot at the very top of the iTunes Electronic Chart. Shortly after the release of Always, A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with Panama’s Jarrah McCleary about their music videos, the Always EP, and sporting a ginger moustache. Give the interview a read below:
AMBY: Hello Jarrah, cheers for speaking with us today! What have you been up to lately?
Panama: Hi, thanks for having me. Recently I’ve been studying music for screen. I’ve also been busy with Panama playing shows and upgrading my home studio.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Panama: Tim: Sweet, Cam: Gruff, Trev: Chill, Myself: Busy
AMBY: The band have just dropped your 3-track EP, Always. What is the significance behind the EP’s title?
Panama: Always is the title of one of the songs on the EP. I’ve Always liked the idea of using one word as a title for an album or EP, excuse the pun.
AMBY: How We Feel off the EP has an incredible feel. What inspired the song?
Panama: Well thank you. I produced and recorded that track myself at home, that was something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time but didn’t have the confidence until now. ‘How we feel’ was inspired about a personal relationship I had experienced with someone a while back.
AMBY: The lead single, Always, has had 400,000 SoundCloud plays. Did you ever expect the song to have that much success?
Panama: As a songwriter I always try and improve upon what I’ve done before, it’s like any job that you really enjoy, you push it as far as you can go and look for new ways to evolve. I feel really grateful that people have connected with the songs and that it’s translating.
AMBY: Speaking of success, how would you define success for yourselves as a band?
Panama: When I can afford to do it full time then that would be amazing, when I can afford to pay everyone in the band decent money!
AMBY: A fan on YouTube wrote that your videos always have a certain “dark innocence” to them. Is this intentional, and how did this become a theme with your videos?
Panama: Fabian and Vivien from A Nice Idea Every Day came up with the concept for both videos. Because of this we were able to keep the feel consistent and helped develop a unique aesthetic that matches the sentiments of the track and also represent us visually, which is important to get right. You’ll notice the second video is told more from the child’s perspective, that ties in with the ‘dark innocence’ comment.
AMBY: Which of your influences would you love to hang out with for a day?
Panama: Hanging out with Hans Zimmer would be amazing, watching him work!
AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?
Panama: It’s not the songs that bother me, it shows like X Factor that I could do without. No more karaoke please!
AMBY: What’s your favourite release of the year so far?
Panama: The new Mount Kimbie record was pretty impressive, I’m also really looking forward to the new Juan Maclean record!
AMBY: And last but not least, what’s something about Panama that nobody knows yet?
Panama: At one point in time I had a ginger moustache.
Thank you Panama, for giving us your answers!
