Long Island brothers Andrew and Matt Como are fusing together their passion and love for pop, rock, and blues to create The Como Brothers Band. Curious about their debut full-length album Baby Steps, AMBY spoke with Andrew Como of The Como Brothers Band about adorable album artwork, opening for Smash Mouth, the working dynamic of being brothers, and more.
AMBY: Hello The Como Brothers Band, what’s the band been up to lately?
The Como Brothers Band: Hey! We recently opened for American Idol Winner David Cook at 89 North in Patchogue. Such an awesome experience to play in front of someone that talented and successful. He was such a kind and humble guy too.
On November 25th we’re opening for Smash Mouth at The Emporium on Long Island! We’re really looking forward to that show. I remember walking around the house with my blue boombox in third grade jamming out to “All Star”. It’s going to be really weird sharing the stage with them; in an awesome way. If you want to go here‘s the ticket link!
AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?
The Como Brothers Band: I would describe myself as an optimist. Matt’s a realist.
AMBY: Your debut album Baby Steps was recently released. What’s the significance behind the LP’s title?
The Como Brothers Band: We finally recorded a group of songs that became our first full length album. Releasing our first LP was a gigantic step for us, but we’re hoping that when we look back we’ll consider it a very small step. We called it Baby Steps because we wanted the release of our first album to hopefully be a small step in a much longer career. Check it out!
The Como Brothers Band: Thank you. Yup that’s us. We randomly found that picture, and that’s what initially sparked the idea for the album title. It was too good of a picture to not use it; us being at the piano and all.
AMBY: Who or what inspires your blend of blues, pop, and rock?
The Como Brothers Band: We’ve always been intrigued by catchy music with meaningful lyrics that get stuck in your head. The pop side of our writing definitely stems from The Beatles. I’ve always been in awe of how their songs are so unique from each other. They can really put you in a completely different head space from track to track. Blues music has always been music that emotes feelings. When you hear the blues, you don’t think; you just feel. That genre has always really spoke to Matt and I. John Mayer is a huge inspiration to us because he combines pop sensibilities with blues and jazz. He is the reason I picked up a Strat and play the guitar the way I do.
AMBY: You recently announced that you’re opening for Smash Mouth and Jillian Jensen. But who would be in your ultimate concert line-up?
The Como Brothers Band: The most awesome dream concert that I could be a part of would be opening for John Mayer, and then coming out to play a surprise encore of “Hey Jude” with Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, and John Mayer.
AMBY: Do you find the dynamics of being brothers makes working together easier, or do you tend to butt heads more often because of it?
The Como Brothers Band: We definitely butt heads from time to time, but I think being brothers allows us to trim a lot of unnecessary fat. We never have to walk on egg shells, and I think this always lets us get what we need to get done a lot faster. We’re very blunt with each other when it comes to writing, and I believe it’s a to-the-point process because of it.
AMBY: Which groups or artists from New York should we keep our eyes on?
The Como Brothers Band: Check out Odane Whilby & Cardinal Theory. Talk about an artist with heart and soul. Check that dude and his unbelievable band out. Really inspiring stuff.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
The Como Brothers Band: Even though it was released in 2012, it still hasn’t been a full year since it’s release. So I’m going to have to say Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Como Brothers that nobody knows yet?
The Como Brothers Band: We have a second lyric video off of Baby Steps to be released very soon! It’s for our song “Hey Kristen”. Our producer/engineer Tom Flynn made it. Very talented guy from VuDu Studios. That’s where we recorded all three of our releases. We just released a lyric video for our song “Numbed”. Check it out!
Thank you The Como Brothers Band, for giving us your answers!
