As Elephants Are last spoke with A Music Blog, Yea? back in April of this year. And since then, 2013 has been insanely busy for the quartet between new releases and a plethora of festival dates. Sure, we’ve had them on AMBY since then by using their latest single Crystal as Song of the Day, but it was nice to catch up with them in a recent interview. We spoke about playing Reading and Leeds Festival, rehearsals, phat tunes, and a debut EP, check it out!
AMBY: Hey As Elephants Are, how’s everyone doing?
As Elephants Are: Very well thank you, just kicking back on the sofa.
AMBY: The last time we spoke with you was back in April! What’s been keeping the band busy since then?
As Elephants Are: This has been the busiest year since the band started really. We’ve played a lot more shows than ever before and have been writing and recording lots of new music.
AMBY: Your latest single Crystal was recently released, and it sounds beautiful. What’s the track about?
As Elephants Are: What inspired us to write the song ‘Crystal’ was when Ben went to Notting Hill Carnival and he was taken back by a lot of the drumbeats and the whole vibe of the place. We tried to capture this sound and put it into one of our own songs.
AMBY: What inspired the striking artwork for Crystal?
As Elephants Are: We came across this amazing Italian artist called Marco and his artwork just seemed to fit the vibe of the songs. He has also done artwork on our previous single ‘Youth Blood’. Check him out!
AMBY: Over the summer you played Reading and Leeds Festival along with supporting Half Moon Run. What were some of the highlights of your summer gigs?
As Elephants Are: Playing ‘War Cry’ at Reading Festival was very special for us and something that I don’t think we will ever forget. Playing in Edinburgh with Half Moon Run was amazing as well, it was the first time we’ve played in Scotland. It was great to support such an amazing live band and it really helped warm us up for Reading and Leeds.
AMBY: What are your rehearsals usually like? Does the band have a set time to practice or are rehearsals more off-the-cuff?
As Elephants Are: They are pretty set in stone normally but if one of us has a really great idea that they can’t wait to work on then we will just get together and try to jam something out.
AMBY: Has there ever been a song you wish you wrote? And if so, which song?
As Elephants Are: Toxic by Britney Spears cos it’s a phat tune.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
As Elephants Are: There haven’t been many albums that have jumped out at us this year. We are big fans of Blaenavon’s EP – Koso, Amber Run – Noah and China Rats – Don’t Play With Fire
AMBY: What would the fortune teller predict about As Elephants Are down the road?
As Elephants Are: A debut EP in early 2014.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about As Elephants Are that nobody knows yet?
As Elephants Are: We eat, sleep, rave, repeat.
Thank you As Elephants Are, for giving us your answers!
